Tracking extreme heat and risks across the US this summer season.

Each summer, high temperatures strain public health throughout the US, leading to more emergency room visits and hundreds of heat-related fatalities. As temperatures climb, Dinogo keeps an eye on extreme heat conditions and the associated risks for Americans on a daily basis.
In an effort to help Americans brace for dangerous heat, the National Weather Service and the CDC have rolled out a new national forecast this year, highlighting heat-related risks across the country.
This forecast takes into account the intensity and rarity of predicted heat, its likely duration, and the expected impact on residents in various locations, drawing on CDC data related to past effects such as fatalities.
The latest heat forecast map is available here.
A significant portion of the US population will be affected by heat advisories, warnings, and watches issued by the National Weather Service this summer. On average, more than 60 million people experienced these conditions between June 21 and September 22, 2023, according to data from the service.
This chart illustrates the population impacted each day during the past month.
As global temperatures rise, heat waves have become more frequent, intense, and prolonged. Nighttime temperatures are also increasing, offering little to no cooling relief.
With rising temperatures, heat records are expected to be broken across the nation.
Each day, the weather service issues forecasts predicting possible record-breaking temperatures across various locations. Here are the areas where high temperature records may be surpassed in the next three days.
National Weather Service forecasters also attempt to predict average temperatures for various regions across the country in the coming weeks. This map shows the likelihood of areas in the continental United States experiencing above, below, or near-normal average temperatures.
Darker areas on the map indicate regions where temperatures are more likely to be significantly higher or lower than usual. Gray zones are expected to experience average temperatures close to the norm.
Forecasts are often accurate, with many locations surpassing daily high temperature records. This map highlights places in the continental US where temperatures have exceeded historical calendar day records, according to the Southeastern Regional Climate Center.
