1. What are the dimensions for carry-on luggage?
Most airlines adhere to similar size guidelines for carry-on luggage, typically following standard height, width, and depth measurements.
Generally, the standard size for domestic carry-on luggage is 22 x 14 x 9 inches. For international flights, this might adjust slightly to 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches. Keep in mind that these measurements include handles, wheels, and any other protrusions from your suitcase, so be sure to account for those.
Some airlines, including Delta, American Airlines, Air Canada, and Southwest, use a method called “linear inches” for measuring carry-ons. This total combines height, width, and depth into a single number.
For instance, Delta has a carry-on limit of 45 linear inches, which means your bag’s combined height, width, and depth must be less than 45 inches:
✅ 22 (h) + 14 (w) + 9 (d) = 45 inches✅ 25 (h) + 10 (w) + 10 (d) = 45 inches❌ 24 (h) + 14 (w) + 8 (d) = 46 inches
Carry-on size restrictions are in place to ensure that all luggage fits in the overhead compartments. I always opt for carry-on luggage, no matter the duration of my trip. It prevents overpacking and gives me peace of mind knowing my belongings are within reach, rather than stored below or left behind at the airport!
2. What are the weight limits for carry-on luggage?
Weight restrictions for carry-on bags can be even more confusing than size limits, though they tend to be less strictly enforced. That said, you shouldn’t stuff your bag to the point where it requires a team to lift it into the overhead compartment.
Many major airlines like American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, and United Airlines impose no weight limits. If you can lift your bag over your shoulder and place it in the overhead bin, you’re good to go.
Different airlines have varying limits, which can even change depending on your flight's origin and destination. From a light 15 lbs with Qantas, Qatar, and Singapore Airlines to a more generous 51 lbs with British Airways, it’s crucial to verify ahead of time.
As long as you’re reasonable and stay within a few pounds, you shouldn’t encounter any issues.
3. What qualifies as a personal item on an airplane?
Some airlines specify both carry-on luggage and an additional 'personal item' in their size regulations. This personal item usually refers to a compact bag, such as a laptop case, handbag, or briefcase. The rules for personal items vary widely among airlines, but if it’s small enough to comfortably fit under the seat in front of you, you should be fine.
If you need to bring specific items like a diaper bag for a baby, crutches, or something delicate, airlines are generally accommodating about allowing these as carry-on. However, it’s always a good idea to confirm with the airline beforehand to avoid any issues.
4. What are the standard size limits for international carry-on luggage?
Carry-on dimensions can differ slightly between domestic and international flights, but not significantly. For most international journeys, the maximum carry-on luggage size is 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches or 46 linear inches. If your bag falls within these measurements, it can be considered a carry-on without any trouble.
Some airlines, like Qatar Airways, have specific measurements for carry-on baggage, allowing sizes of 20 x 15 x 10 inches or 45 linear inches. Be especially mindful when flying in Europe or with smaller regional carriers, as their restrictions can vary significantly depending on the aircraft.
5. What distinguishes carry-on luggage from a personal item?
The key distinction between carry-on luggage and a personal item is that carry-on bags are stored in the overhead bins, while personal items fit under the seat in front of you.
Your carry-on luggage is the bag you keep with you rather than check in. If you pack light, using your carry-on allowance can help you avoid checking any bags at all. This is a great advantage, as it means your luggage won’t get lost, and you won’t have to wait at the baggage claim upon arrival.
Many airlines include a carry-on luggage allowance in the cost of your ticket. However, some smaller budget airlines may charge extra, though it's typically still more affordable than paying for checked luggage.
Personal items like purses, laptops, briefcases, or cameras are usually allowed in addition to your carry-on at no extra cost. While size allowances differ by airline, most adhere to the guideline that it must fit under the seat in front of you.
Unsure if your carry-on luggage complies with your airline's size requirements?
To alleviate boarding stress and ensure your carry-on always meets regulations, we developed an enjoyable Bag Measurement tool. Download the Dinogo app, and you'll never need a tape measure again.
Simply open the app and select 'Measure your bag.' Using your camera, capture your luggage, and our app will calculate its exact dimensions. Conveniently, it also compares airline baggage policies, so you can quickly verify that your carry-on fits no matter which airline you're flying with. Check out the video below to see it in action.
6. Policies for Carry-On Luggage on Domestic Airlines
While many airlines have varied restrictions for carry-on luggage size and weight, there's a noticeable trend toward similar standards among them.
Most domestic airlines no longer specify weight limits for carry-on baggage. Among those listed below, only Hawaiian Airlines and Frontier Airlines enforce weight restrictions, while others focus solely on dimensions.
For personal items, airlines like Delta, Alaska, and Hawaiian simply request that it fits under the seat in front of you, without specifying measurements. None of the domestic carriers enforce a weight limit.
To simplify your search, we've reviewed major domestic US airlines and outlined their size and weight limits for both carry-on luggage and personal items. Additionally, we've included useful information, tools, and tips for flying with each airline.

7. Carry-on luggage policies for international airlines
International airlines often offer various fare classes, from economy to first class, each with distinct carry-on and personal item restrictions. Always verify your ticket class before packing.
Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), and Turkish Airlines share the same size limits for carry-on bags, but their weight allowances differ. Most international airlines enforce carry-on weight limits, and many have restrictions for personal items as well, with Air Canada being the notable exception.

Note:
Aer Lingus has a complex set of rules regarding its carry-on policies and associated fees.
For trans-Atlantic flights, both your carry-on and personal item are included in your fare. However, for flights within Europe, you'll need to select a “Carry-on bag with priority boarding” ticket, which costs at least €9.99. Alternatively, you can check your bag for free.
There are numerous exceptions based on fare types and connections, so be sure to review the details when booking.
If you're flying on Aer Lingus Regional (which operates mainly within Ireland and the UK), the allowances are smaller: your carry-on must be a maximum of 18.5 x 13 x 8 inches and weigh no more than 15 lbs.

Additionally, Emirates permits only one item for Economy and Premium Economy fares—either a carry-on or a personal item, not both. If you choose to bring a garment bag, it must be no thicker than eight inches when folded.

In contrast, Business and First Class travelers can bring two carry-on bags and one personal item, with a combined weight of up to 33 lbs. For tickets issued in Brazil, the weight limit is set at 22 lbs.
Additionally, it's important to remember that Qatar Airways counts your laptop and its case as part of your carry-on, rather than a separate personal item. Also, note that their 20-inch luggage length is shorter than what most other airlines offer.
Ryanair
- Carry-on luggage dimensions: 21.5 x 15.5 x 8 inches
- (For Priority fares) Carry-on luggage weight limit: 22 lbs
- (For Priority fares) Personal item dimensions: 15.5 x 8 x 10 inches

Note:
As a budget airline, Ryanair maintains low fares by including only a smaller personal item in its ticket price. To carry a larger bag weighing up to 22 lbs, you'll need to purchase their Priority & 2 Cabin Bags option, with prices varying by route and booking time.
Ryanair's Priority option also allows for early boarding, but be wary! This usually means you'll be standing at the front of the line in a corridor instead of comfortably waiting at the gate.
