Tumi’s 19 Degree Expandable 4-Wheeled Suitcases Are My Top Choice for Luggage—Here’s Why
Welcome to Dinogo Approved: an in-depth look at the travel essentials we absolutely love, can’t live without, and constantly recommend to our friends.
Tumi is a prominent name in the realm of luxury luggage, known for its stylish carry-ons, checked bags, backpacks, and briefcases. After a multi-year break from Tumi—during which I tried out some trendier brands—I purchased a 19 Degree International Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-On this January. By June, I expanded my collection with the larger checked version: the 19 Degree Extended Trip Expandable 4 Wheeled Packing Case. This luggage set has become the ideal blend of functionality and style for my personal and professional travels. Here’s why my other bags are gathering dust as I travel weekly with one—or both—of my Tumi 19 Degree Expandable suitcases.

Finding the Perfect Fit(s)
When I set out to select a new carry-on for 2023, I first listed all the features I desired and those I wanted to avoid. I was certain I preferred a hard-shell bag over a soft-sided one, as my travels often take me to areas where my luggage is exposed to various elements, and waterproof claims have generally disappointed me with soft-shell bags. I ruled out aluminum for my hard-sided material, having found it dents and scuffs easily if the carry-on needs to be checked. My goal was to find a bag made from recycled polycarbonate (to reduce my carbon footprint while flying) that could accommodate all the souvenirs I love collecting during my trips. I also wanted to avoid the stress of checking my bag at international airports or at boarding gates for smaller planes, knowing it wouldn’t fit in the measuring bin. (Typically, the domestic limit for carry-on luggage is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, with many international airlines requiring even smaller sizes.)
My search led me to Tumi’s 19 Degree International Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-On, priced at $750, making it the most affordable of Tumi’s hard-sided international carry-ons. Even with nearly a dozen color choices, I opted for the classic black. After just one short trip with my new Tumi, I was completely taken with my little clamshell case. Despite its compact, sleek design, it held a surprising amount, and both the shell and zipper lining stood up to my weight as I stuffed it to the brim (and somehow managed to close the expandable zipper to meet carry-on limits). The thick, curved zippers seemed robust, and the four recessed dual spinner wheels glided effortlessly across the airport floor, almost like roller skates. I was so pleased with my choice that I soon bought its larger counterpart, the 19 Degree Extended Trip Expandable 4 Wheeled Packing Case, which is essentially a larger version of the carry-on.
Dimensions and Exterior Quality
While most features remain the same, the primary differences between my carry-on and checked Tumis are size and weight. Here’s how those specifications compare:

Dimensions | 30.5 x 20 x 11 inches (up to 13 inches when expanded) | 21.8 x 14 x 9 inches (and up to 11 inches when expanded) |
Weight | 12.1 pounds | 7.9 pounds |
Capacity | 99 liters (when zipped) | 38 liters (when zipped) |
Price | $950 | $750 |
Both of these clamshell-opening cases feature a distinctive wavy, ridged exterior, zip entry to the main compartment, zipper expansion, an integrated TSA lock (with zippers that snap into place), a three-stage telescoping handle on top, retractable top and side carry handles, a luggage tag, and those delightfully smooth spinner wheels (which I can't stop raving about!). All shells, zippers, and grab handles are treated to be antimicrobial. As of now, both are available in six glossy colors: black, navy, red, hunter green, deep plum, and blush. Additionally, three matte textured options in black, gray, and slate blue can be found for both the carry-on and packing case. You can also have your initials embossed at no extra charge.
Other distinctions include a built-in USB port on the carry-on that the checked bag lacks, and the four small feet on the side of the checked bag to prevent scratching the exterior when it’s not resting on its wheels.
After 30 trips combined, both of my bags have largely retained their original shine, aside from a few minor scratches. No dents or bruises. They clean up easily with a cloth or sponge and have withstood outdoor elements with remarkable resilience. They are both beautiful and practical; however, I must admit that my understated set doesn’t attract the compliments that some of my flashier bags do. I don’t sense any luggage envy from friends or colleagues traveling alongside me (which is perfectly fine). If you're looking for luggage that will elicit oohs and aahs, these may not be the bags for you.

Interior Quality
Reflecting their external similarities, both of my Tumis offer comparable interiors. Each features two equally sized compartments: one completely covered by a zippered lining, while the other remains open but secured with compression straps. There are numerous zip pockets throughout, including one within the zippered lining and a dedicated space for dirty laundry.
Each bag is equipped with a unique Tumi Tracer, designed to assist in recovering lost luggage. (This tracer operates similarly to an Apple AirTag, but only Tumi has access to the information. For real-time tracking from your phone, you’ll still need an AirTag.) The checked bag also includes a hanger bracket for organizing suits that the carry-on does not have.
When it comes to capacity, my 19 Degree International Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-On is my go-to for weekend getaways, comfortably holding 38 liters when zipped up. While Tumi hasn’t specified the exact volume with the expandable feature, the additional two inches it offers lets me pack effectively for a four-day trip. Note that when expanded, the carry-on must be checked. (I often fly one way with it as a carry-on, then check the expanded version on the return trip, filled with all my new treasures and wine bottles.)
My 19 Degree Extended Trip Expandable 4 Wheeled Packing Case is perfect for trips lasting anywhere from five days to a month. Even when unexpanded, it boasts a generous 99-liter capacity, allowing me to pack several outfit choices for week-long adventures or all-weather conditions during multi-destination travels. However, this ample space sometimes leads to overpacking, with my case often tipping the scales between 55 and 60 pounds at the airport. I’ve occasionally managed this by using points to book business-class tickets, which permit bags up to 70 pounds. In other instances, I’ve brought my carry-on along and shifted items to it. Although I could probably fit everything into the packing case, I prefer taking both Tumis on trips longer than a week to help balance my load and avoid excess baggage fees.

Price and Warranty Details
Priced at $750 and $950, these Tumi polycarbonate bags are among the more affordable options within the brand's usual range. I personally favor this hard-shell material over the pricier aluminum or titanium varieties, especially since they lack expandable features. Having used luggage that ranges from significantly more expensive to quite inexpensive, I find this collection perfectly aligns with my travel needs and budget.
It's a pleasant surprise that there are no shipping or return fees when purchasing either bag. Both include Tumi's standard Five-Year Warranty. In the first year, all types of damage are covered, even those caused by airlines. From years two to five, the warranty covers repairs or replacements only for normal wear and tear or defects in materials or workmanship, including any structural issues like faulty zippers, handles, or locks.
In summary: Investing in Tumi luggage is worthwhile.
Whether used separately or together, Tumi’s 19 Degree International Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-On and 19 Degree Extended Trip Expandable 4 Wheeled Packing Case have become my preferred suitcases. They offer a stylish and lightweight design, but more importantly, they deliver exceptional functionality, making packing for my next adventure feel more familiar and exciting rather than stressful.
