United Airlines Launches Innovative First-Class Seats
United Airlines has unveiled advanced, high-tech first-class seats on select domestic routes, marking the first upgrade to its domestic first-class experience since 2015.
The most significant upgrades focus on technology. The new first-class seats now include three types of charging ports (a USB-C, a standard AC outlet, and a wireless charging option on the armrest); a 13-inch high-definition screen on the seatback (complete with a remote for easy access); and Bluetooth support for wireless headphones. Additional features include vegan leather upholstery, privacy screens between adjacent seats, a winged headrest to enhance privacy, Italian quartzite cocktail tables, a spacious 18- by 8.5-inch tray table with a tablet holder, improved ergonomic cushioning, and five inches of recline.

Mark Muren, United's managing director of identity, product, and loyalty, stated that the new first-class seats were crafted with the modern traveler in mind, featuring "more charging options, larger spaces for devices, food, drinks, and personal belongings, along with enhanced privacy." He added, "As we enhance the onboard experience, we’re challenging outdated industry standards and anticipating future needs to adapt to the evolving ways people live and travel."
It's important to note that United refers to its frontmost premium seats as business class on long-haul flights (specifically United Polaris business class, which offers pod-like, lie-flat seating) and as first class on shorter domestic journeys.
Currently, the new first-class seats are being introduced on select Boeing 737 aircraft, with plans for United to equip about 200 domestic planes by 2026. This includes certain Boeing 737 NGs (Next Generation narrow-body aircraft), Airbus A321neos, and 737 MAX planes in their fleet.
A United spokesperson mentioned that the new domestic first-class seats are part of ongoing initiatives to "enhance the overall customer experience across all cabins and every touchpoint."
The spokesperson also highlighted app updates designed to improve the airport experience, the introduction of new United Next planes (200 aircraft currently in production, featuring larger overhead compartments and more premium seating), and the expansion or renovation of club offerings (such as the massive new United lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey).
