Ways to uplift Asian and Asian American communities both locally and while traveling.

Racism against Asian and Asian American groups in the U.S. has a long history, but the pandemic has escalated violent incidents. Hate-fueled remarks labeling COVID-19 as the 'Chinese virus' have exacerbated the situation.
The violence has surged, impacting places from San Francisco to New York City. Entrepreneur and activist Tina Craig emphasizes that 'Racial injustice and hate crimes against Asian Americans often go unreported.'
For every reported incident, many more go unnoticed.
To discover actionable steps to support these communities, we consulted Craig, who actively advocates against these hate crimes, and reached out to our TPG Facebook group for recommendations on Asian and Asian American businesses and places to support during your travels.
What are some ways to support Asian and Asian American communities while traveling throughout the U.S.?
Your next journey offers plenty of opportunities to discover businesses, destinations, and museums that promote understanding and support for these communities.
Craig suggests visiting Chinatowns and Asian-owned restaurants in the cities you explore. 'Every little effort matters,' Craig noted.
Seattle
Nicole LeBlanc highlights the Seattle Asian Art Museum as a 'stunning collection located in an art deco building amid the lush greenery of Volunteer Park, which also features a botanical garden and plant conservatory. Both museums offer excellent programs for children and adults alike (under usual circumstances).'

Miranda Ming recommends visiting the Wing Luke Museum.
Jade Anderson emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses as well. 'While the larger establishments often receive the spotlight, we should encourage people to explore local, smaller Asian restaurants, markets, and shops... I live in a smaller county situated between Seattle and (Vancouver, British Columbia). My favorites include Rachawadee Thai, Sarkall's Donuts & Noodle Soup, and Pyung Chang BBQ.'
Los Angeles
'Visit Little Tokyo in downtown where you can discover the Japanese American National Museum,' advises Marla Jo Fisher.
Rene Webb Miller suggests visiting Little Saigon in Westminster, California. Fisher agrees, adding, 'The Asian Garden Mall is a great place to explore, and the food court is authentic! I adore Au Lac for its tasty vegan options. Brodard Chateau offers a charming vintage atmosphere, while Seafood Cove is one of the rare spots still serving dim sum from carts that come to your table. For the best pho, Pho 79 is a must.'
Dallas
LeBlanc also recommends the Crow Museum of Asian Art located in the Dallas Arts District, which boasts an impressive permanent collection along with exceptional temporary exhibitions. It actively supports working artists by regularly hosting shows and installations, and best of all, entry is free!
Memphis
Jamie Williams recommends visiting the Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art, also known as the Jade Museum. It features 'life-sized jade animals and intricately crafted objects made from jade and other semi-precious stones,' as noted by Atlas Obscura.
San Francisco
Chris Ruegsegger highly recommends San Francisco's Chinatown, the oldest in North America.
In this vibrant area, you'll discover art, markets, restaurants, and shops, all within walking distance. Leujay Cruz suggests visiting Canton Restaurant, the first Chinese restaurant in the U.S.
Utah
'Many people associate Asian culture primarily with coastal cities,' notes TPG reader Su Chon. 'Make sure to visit the Topaz Museum in Delta, and drive out to see the remnants of the internment camp. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts features several works by Chiura Obata.'

'South Salt Lake, located just outside of Salt Lake City, features a mini Chinatown with vendors offering Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Thai goods, a K-pop dance studio, and a large grocery store. There are also local small vendors like Southeast Asian Market, Seoul Market, and Great Wall.'
Oregon
Sandy Baker suggests the Kam Wah Chung & Co. Museum, also known as the Kam Wah Chung Company Building. This state park and National Historic Landmark in John Day preserves early Chinese culture and is known as the 'largest intact collection of Chinese medicine and formulas in the world.'
What are effective ways to support Asian and Asian American communities from home?
You don't need to be traveling to support these communities; you can begin right now in your own hometown.
'Above all, please stop viewing us as if we are a virus. If you encounter an Asian person while traveling, don’t turn away in fear or, worse, make any rude comments,' advises Craig.
Craig emphasizes the need to dismantle the model-minority myth, a harmful stereotype that negatively impacts the Asian American community. 'Start by educating yourself about the diverse experiences of Asian Americans. It's extensive, nuanced, and a crucial part of the fabric of this country,' Craig states.
There are numerous volunteer organizations to engage with as well. Here are just a few that Craig suggests:
'These organizations have a wide reach and offer various ways to learn and contribute,' says Craig.
Whether you’re at home or traveling, it’s crucial to speak out if you witness racism. 'Don’t just shake your head in sympathy and walk away. Speak out! Be an ally! True allyship requires action. The more people raise awareness,' Craig emphasized, 'the greater the opportunity we have for meaningful change.'
