What Amount Should You Tip Your Bellman?
Whether you're exploring the U.S. or traveling internationally, you'll probably meet a helpful bellman during your hotel visit. Regardless of your cash situation, here's what you need to know about tipping etiquette.
Tipping While Traveling
Abroad, tipping isn't typically anticipated at every interaction. So, if you lack the exact change, your bellman won’t be offended. However, giving a few American dollars is a kind gesture; in some regions, U.S. dollars are just as appreciated as local currency. If you have no cash and your bellman provided excellent service, consider tracking them down at the end of your stay to offer a tip.
Tipping in America
In the U.S., where porters often earn below minimum wage, tips are necessary to help boost their income. Don’t hesitate to ask a bellman to break a larger bill. “These workers are handling cash, so they can help you,” explains one bellman from a New York City hotel. Alternatively, note your porter’s name and leave a tip with the concierge before you check out. Generally, a standard tip is $1 per bag. If your bellman exceeds expectations (or you want to ensure great service throughout your stay), consider tipping $5.
