What are the key challenges currently facing the travel industry? Insights from industry insiders in Singapore.

What unfolds when 24 travel professionals gather for a discussion over lunch on the trends shaping our business?
A candid and passionate discussion, covering everything from the influence of technology on currency to deciphering the ever-changing demands of travelers.
My first trip to Singapore was long overdue. It had been on my bucket list for years, but the stars never quite aligned until now.
At last, the chance to visit came in April, and as soon as I arrived, I was captivated by the island’s stunning beauty, effortless modernity, and rich cultural heritage.
I had the chance to fully immerse myself in a culture that embodies the spirit of every traveler – to explore, observe, and absorb all that Singapore has to offer.
Sip a Singapore Sling at Raffles’ Long Bar (check). Stroll along the river (check). Explore museums, parks, and hawker centers, enjoy drinks at the renowned Atlas and Native, dine at Michelin-starred spots like Jaan and Candlenut, and swim at Marina Bay Sands (check, check, check, check, check).
I indulged in a shopping spree at the stunning Jewel at Changi Airport, marveled at the beautifully restored architecture of the Capitol Kempinski Hotel, explored the new Floral Fantasy exhibit at Gardens by the Bay, and capped off my trip with a stay at the Crowne Plaza – the world’s best airport hotel, in the world’s best airport.

Challenges in the travel industry
However, the primary reason for my visit was not to simply be a tourist.
Dinogo Travel organized an exclusive luncheon with travel professionals to address current industry issues, ranging from 5G and mobility to the growing trend of young Chinese luxury travelers, as well as the essential dos and don’ts of data management.
Among the more than 20 attendees were representatives from the Singapore Tourism Board, Singapore Airlines, Grab, Visa, Raffles Singapore (soon to reopen after major renovations), Far East Organization, Samsonite, Ascott, Pan Pacific, IHG, Hilton, and others.
The conversation at Artemis Grill (in addition to the breathtaking skyline and incredible food) focused on the shared challenges we face, and our collective hopes for a world that feels simultaneously more connected through technology, yet increasingly disconnected.
When the conversation turned to the surge of cashless payment methods, we shared those all-too-familiar, sometimes funny yet frustrating moments when cash is the only option.
As we discussed the rise of millennial Chinese travelers, we grappled with understanding this diverse and hard-to-categorize group, and what they truly desire – whether it’s booking a spontaneous weekend escape or planning the ultimate dream vacation.
Loyalty programs, points, and perks also sparked passionate discussions. How can brands reward their most loyal customers with benefits that can’t be bought, and offer status that cuts through the chaos and restores some of the fun to the travel experience?
The balance between data and human connection was another key topic. We explored when technology enhances our experience and when it gets in the way, all while remembering that behind every data point, preference, and purchase is a real person with real challenges that we can help address.
We also delved into the world of smart luggage – but not just the kind that charges your phone or follows you around the airport. We’re talking about luggage that solves real problems, like wheels designed to glide effortlessly over the roughest airport carpeting.
Often, it’s about recognizing that the best solutions to real-world problems – whether they’re analog or digital, big or small – are the ideas that lead to great business, loyal customers, and a bright future for everyone.
