Whether you're planning to begin a new chapter abroad or simply take a vacation overseas, obtaining a new passport can be a pricey affair.
Even the most budget-conscious travelers can be taken by surprise when replacing an expired (or soon-to-expire) passport, which could end up costing them hundreds of dollars.
After gathering all your paperwork and navigating through the necessary bureaucratic processes, you’ll hopefully receive your passport within a few weeks or months. But what will it cost you?
Here are some of the world’s most expensive passports, along with a few more typical price ranges. The prices listed are in local currencies and U.S. dollars for adult passports valid for 10 years, unless noted otherwise. Currency conversions are approximate as of early May 2022.

The process for renewing a Cuban passport is different from the others on this list.
Each renewal costs an additional 500 CUP, continuing until the sixth year of the passport’s validity, at which point the process of obtaining a new passport begins again.


The Syrian passport is one of the least powerful, yet it remains among the most expensive.

Lebanon is one of the few nations that requires its local citizens to pay more than expatriates abroad for passport renewals.
