Summer in Porto offers long, sunny days and mostly clear skies. Rainfall decreases during this season, though occasional showers can still occur. June marks the start of the city's busiest event season, featuring lively festivals like the 50-hour, non-stop Serralves em Festa and the grand celebration of Festa de São João, honoring St. John the Baptist. Naturally, hotel prices surge as visitors flock to enjoy the festive atmosphere and warm climate.
Temperatures hover around 23°C (73°F), but heatwaves can drive them into the high 30°Cs (high 90°Fs). July and August are the hottest months, attracting tripeiros (locals) to cool off at Praia de Matosinhos and other nearby beaches. Remember, even on the warmest days, ocean temperatures can feel brisk along Portugal’s northern beaches.
August is the peak tourist month in Porto, so it's wise to secure your accommodations early to avoid missing out. The Porto Busker Fest transforms the city with spontaneous stages, creating a lively backdrop for your holiday. Although the soaring temperatures in August drop in September, the crowds tend to linger. Enjoy the final days of Porto's vibrant open-air summer festivals, including markets, yoga in the park, and performances like Concertos na Avenida.
As expected, summer is the height of visitor season in Porto. Anticipate higher hotel rates and larger crowds, making it essential to book in advance at popular restaurants.
Savor Porto's wine and pleasant weather from March to May and in October.
Porto enjoys two shoulder seasons in spring and autumn. From late March to early May, vibrant flowers adorn the parks throughout the city, and a countryside day trip reveals wildflowers during picturesque hikes in northern Portugal's nature reserves. April experiences fewer rain showers than the preceding months, and colorful Easter processions fill the streets in Porto and nearby Braga, home to Portugal's largest Easter celebration.
With warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours, May is perfect for leisurely strolls along the riverbanks and across Porto's bridges, as well as boat excursions along the Douro. While visitor numbers and hotel prices rise, better deals are still available compared to summer. Theater enthusiasts will also appreciate May, as the International Festival of Iberian Expression Theater (FITEI) takes center stage nearly all month long.
Late September and October showcase stunning autumn hues in the city’s parks and tree-lined avenues. This colorful transformation is particularly striking along the Douro River's banks just outside Porto. It’s also the grape harvest season in the Douro Valley, offering a chance to witness winemaking and grape-stomping firsthand.
The weather during this period is a blend, with more rainfall than in summer yet fewer rainy days than in winter. Temperatures are ideal for outdoor activities, averaging around 17°C (63°F) in March and rising to about 20°C (68°F) in October.

Porto is known for its chilly, rainy winters. December is particularly wet, averaging around 15 days of rainfall. However, you might find brief dry spells amidst the downpours. The festive atmosphere of Christmas markets, roasted chestnuts, and beautifully decorated squares creates a delightful backdrop for December visits to Porto.
Visiting during this season calls for layered clothing. You may start with a cold, misty morning, followed by midday sunshine with highs around 15°C (59°F) and possible evening showers. January is the coldest month, but nighttime temperatures seldom drop below 5°C (41°F). On dreary days, focus on indoor activities like exploring art galleries and museums, medieval cathedrals, and other attractions. When the rain arrives, seek refuge in a cozy café like Café Candelabro or a candlelit wine bar such as Prova. Additionally, the IndieJúnior children's film festival makes this a great season for family visits.
Porto’s lively entertainment scene continues to thrive even in the chilly days of February. This month is perfect for enjoying concerts at the Casa da Música and other venues. Film enthusiasts should not miss Portugal’s leading fantasy film festival, Fantasporto, which frequently aligns with the festive parades of Carnaval.
For a bit of cold, damp weather, you can score incredible deals on flights and accommodations. Expect discounts on lodging of up to 50% off peak-season rates.
