When Solo Journeys Create a New Travel Crew
Venturing out independently, these four adventurers returned home with lifelong friends and exciting travel plans!
Kat, Kristen, Julita, and Gagan crossed paths by coincidence on a tour in Italy. Each was traveling solo through Europe, and they quickly formed a strong connection, continuing their adventure together in Greece. Since then, they've remained close friends and travel companions.
This travel crew hails from various corners of North America, calling Vancouver, Ottawa, New York City, and Halifax their homes. Since their encounter in Italy, they've shared other trips, visited each other's hometowns, and are eager to plan new international adventures as a group.
Connecting with amazing people is one of the most fulfilling aspects of traveling, and forging international friendships truly makes the world feel more interconnected. Here’s an insight into why these four travel partners complement each other so well and how their shared experiences in diverse cultures have influenced their perspectives on life.
What traits and attributes foster harmony within a traveling group?
Kat: We make the ideal travel companions because our personalities align so well. We're always eager to try new experiences, immerse ourselves in different cultures, and engage with locals. There’s no pressure to conform—we're perfectly fine splitting up and reconvening later. Our varied backgrounds also allow us to share unique viewpoints.
Kristen: Exactly! We get along well and there’s no judgment. If Julita needs an hour for her makeup, we’ll just enjoy a cocktail in the lobby. If Kat wants to explore a hidden gem of a restaurant while the rest of us pass, we’ll catch up with her after dinner!
The Amalfi Coast provided us with unforgettable sun-soaked memories. What stands out as a memorable moment from your first trip together in Italy?
Kristen: There were countless delightful experiences—enjoying fresh spaghetti in Capri, taking beach naps with Gagan under the Amalfi sun, and hearing Kat’s beautiful singing while traveling in a van with other adventurers...
Julita: Wandering through Capri and Sorrento. It was my first time there, and Kristen and I enjoyed a lovely and picturesque (and budget-friendly) lunch!
Kat: Julita and I picked up fresh, local Amalfi tomatoes, bread, cured meats, and cheeses for a picnic. It was a delicious and perfect way to relax and recharge.
The friends were there for each other during their visit to the Acropolis. What was your favorite moment in Greece together?
Kat: Exploring the Acropolis. We were all in awe of the ancient structures from the 5th century BC.
Gagan: That was great, but I also loved our final night at the rooftop club in our hotel!
How has traveling around the world influenced your views on various cultures?
Gagan: Meeting people from diverse cultural backgrounds helps you realize that what unites us is often greater than what divides us.
Julita: Absolutely. Traveling removes many uncertainties and reveals how alike we are, even if we come from different backgrounds and cultures.
Kat: I might not grasp someone's language, but I understand the importance of caring for loved ones, sibling rivalries, and the chatter of teenage girls. The stages of life are just as universal in New York as they are in India, Paris, Italy, Chile, or Canada.
What draws you to travel, and what kinds of trips do you prefer?
Julita: I’m passionate about traveling because I have a thirst for knowledge. Even brief trips provide a glimpse into the sights, sounds, flavors, and people of a place.
Gagan: Absolutely. I’m captivated by historical sites in every location, but I also cherish creating memories with friends and embracing new traditions.
If you had to categorize each other with “travel personalities”, who would fit which role?
Julita: Kristen and Kat are the ones who plan everything, but they always consider my preferences. We’re all food enthusiasts. Gagan is the life of the party, while I tend to go along with whatever happens!
Kristen: Well, Gagan is so laid-back that she once slept in a bed with ants! I’d also say that Gagan and Julita are the ones who spark conversations.
Gagan: I’d say Kristen is the photographer as well. And I definitely have the biggest love for food.
Kat: I see myself as the Foodie, but Kristen is definitely the wine expert! Julita and I are the biggest history buffs, and Julita has an incredible memory, which is fantastic for navigating!
Hawaii could be the next adventure for this group of travelers. What’s your next dream travel destination?
Kat: I’d love to visit Machu Picchu in Peru, explore Yellowstone National Park, take a trip from Ontario to Toronto and Montreal, or perhaps just relax on the beach in Hawaii.
Gagan: Absolutely, Hawaii! Or perhaps even Nova Scotia.
Kristen: I’m still eager to visit Napa Valley for a wine getaway and check out San Francisco. Until then, our Friday night Zoom calls will keep the spirit alive.
Julita: I have a strong desire to explore Asia, including Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
