Staying in a hotel inaugurated by a king isn't a common experience, which adds to the regal atmosphere of the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid. This hotel has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century when Spanish monarch Alfonso XIII, a travel enthusiast, envisioned a luxurious, modern establishment fit for visiting royalty. He even personally financed part of the project's launch.

This new hotel marked Spain's inaugural steel-framed structure, boasting electric lighting, elevators, and an abundance of bathrooms (though not one in every room). Additionally, a telephone was available on each floor for guests — quite the novelty at that time.

The king presided over the hotel's grand opening in 1910, and since then, Madrid's Ritz has attracted distinguished guests and luxury enthusiasts from around the globe. It became part of the Mandarin Oriental brand in 2015, and while the royal charm may be less pronounced now, the hotel continues to exude opulence.
From 2018 to 2021, it underwent a substantial renovation costing 100 million euros (approximately $163 million at the time), led by French designers Gilles & Boissier. This project included restoring many of its historic features crafted by Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz.

Discover what else has evolved at the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid, and which remarkable features remain as impressive as ever.

Alternatively, you can take the Metro from the airport for 4.50 euros ($4.90), though this option requires at least one transfer and will take about an hour to reach the nearest station, Banco de Espana.

Booking details
In recent years, Madrid has witnessed a surge in luxury hotels. Notable newcomers include the Four Seasons Madrid, the transformation of Villa Magna into a Rosewood, along with the launches of both the Madrid Edition and Thompson Madrid, as well as a stylish branch of JW Marriott. All are centrally located.

Nevertheless, the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid, continues to demand premium rates (or euros, in this context) for its 100 rooms and 53 suites.

Rates begin at 1,000 euros ($1,092) for standard Premier rooms. The Deluxe room where I stayed is priced between 150 and 250 euros ($164 to $273) more per night than Premier rooms, though this can vary with the season.

To secure the best rates and any special promotions, it's advisable to book directly with Mandarin Oriental. The hotel is not part of Chase's The Edit or the Capital One Premier Collection. However, if you hold The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, you can make a reservation through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts at AmexTravel.com. Benefits include upgrades based on availability, up to $100 in on-property credit for amenities like drinks or meals, complimentary breakfast for two each day, and guaranteed late checkout.

The Atmosphere

Guests at the Ritz Madrid during its golden era must have been captivated by its grandeur, featuring a round-turreted exterior, a magnificent staircase that flowed into the lobby, and the majestic Palm Court, where crystal ceilings illuminated affluent Madrilenos enjoying afternoon tea together.

Modern travelers will find themselves equally amazed. The Palm Court's glass ceiling has been beautifully restored (it had been covered since the 1960s), creating a bright focal point for the hotel. Also striking is the stunning new artwork, including the leaf-inspired brass and nickel sculpture "Remolino del Retiro" that hangs above the entrance hall. The concierge desk draws inspiration from the nearby Retiro Park and the strawberry tree featured on Madrid's coat of arms.

The hotel's public areas are still bustling with affluent guests, now representing a diverse mix from around the world. You’re just as likely to overhear conversations in Arabic, Mandarin, English, and French as you are to catch snippets of Castellano.

At this hotel, hospitality speaks a universal language. A member of the attentive staff, clad in a perfectly tailored uniform, will be ready to assist you with any inquiries even before you have the chance to ask.
Accommodations at Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid

Upon my arrival, I entrusted my bags to one of the friendly bellhops at the entrance and finalized the check-in process at the front desk. I was then guided to the fifth floor, walking down a hallway adorned with carpeting that playfully showcased different crowns in front of each guest room. My Deluxe room was number 507.

The room's design beautifully melds classic and modern elements — featuring a simply carved wooden bed adorned with whimsical spiral posts and pressed Cordoba leather accents, inspired by bullfighters' uniforms. The pristine white walls, original molded ceiling, and glossy oak parquet floors enhance the elegant atmosphere.
Sleek, modern armchairs in curvaceous designs flanked a small table, which held Solan de Cabras spring water and a miniature almond cake from Ritz Madrid — a nod to Alfonso XIII's wedding cake. The interplay of past and present was evident in every glance (and every bite).

A long, slender table served as a workspace, equipped with a cozy bench and accessible power and USB-A outlets, conveniently located beside the bed. A large high-definition flat-screen television offered a variety of Spanish and international channels, along with details about the hotel and its amenities.
Storage was confined to one side of the minibar, which featured an assortment of Spanish wines and spirits, along with a Nespresso coffee machine and a kettle for tea.
Sunlight poured in through the glass doors, leading to a narrow balcony that gazed out over Plaza de la Lealtad. During the evening turndown, heavy blackout curtains and electronic blinds were fully drawn to guarantee a serene night's sleep. The blinds and room lighting could be controlled via bedside panels, as well as others near the door and in the bathroom.
The bathroom featured a water closet with its own sink situated off a small corridor, while both the vanity and bathing area were located on the opposite side.
The dark Emperador marble countertop featured two sinks, which also extended to the flooring of the glass-enclosed bathing suite.
This area featured both a walk-in shower and a freestanding soaking tub, all supplied with Natura Bisse bath products. The walls were adorned with gleaming white Dolomite stone. A mirrored panel could slide open or closed between the bathroom and the bedroom, allowing for customizable privacy.
Measuring around 400 square feet, the Deluxe room exuded a sense of spaciousness (particularly by European standards) and was tastefully decorated without feeling excessive. It served as a perfect retreat from the bustling city during the sweltering July heat.

Guests can indulge in caviar displays, starters like fresh oysters with mignonette ($35) and jamon de bellota ($49.50), traditional Spanish dishes such as fresh gazpacho ($20) and patatas bravas ($20), along with heartier options like grilled beef tenderloin with Perigord sauce ($50).
This is also where breakfast, usually included with most rates, is served. This is complemented by a la carte hot choices such as made-to-order eggs and omelets; avocado toast with herbs, beet greens, and macadamia powder; and Asian dishes like congee or a dim sum selection.
Afternoon tea is offered daily from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Palm Court. Priced at $62 per person, it features an array of pastries and delicate finger sandwiches, along with a selection of TWG teas sourced from around the globe.
Don't miss the chance to view artist Juan Carlos Garcia Perez's mirrored wall installation; it offers a captivating, fragmented view of the luxurious surroundings.
Champagne Bar
Longtime Ritz Madrid patrons may recall the hidden gem that was the Krug bar, a staple at the hotel for many years. Although that venue has closed, it has been succeeded by a charming eight-seat Champagne Bar tucked at the back of Palm Court. Its gold-accented shelves resemble a curiosity cabinet filled with exquisite bottles of champagne.
The offerings here feature Champagne by the glass (primarily Ruinart and Moet et Chandon) along with an extensive collection of rare vintages by the bottle, including a 1982 Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs priced at $8,680. Guests can also choose from a variety of a la carte dishes and tasting menus focused on caviar and seafood.
Stop by for an aperitif, but be sure to leave some appetite for dinner at the hotel's premier restaurant.
Deessa
Located on the western side of the hotel’s ground floor, Deessa boasts two Michelin stars. It is led by chef Quique Dacosta, renowned for his restaurant in Denia, Spain, which has earned three Michelin stars, along with another establishment, Poblet, that also holds two stars.
Adorned with recessed golden domes, sparkling crystal chandeliers, and large busts displayed in glass and chrome cases, the indoor dining area evokes a blend of Versailles' Hall of Mirrors and a contemporary art exhibit at the nearby Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Prepare for a wonderfully extended evening filled with palate-pleasing creations from executive chef Domenico Vildacci, selected from one of the various tasting menus. Dishes may feature luscious crème brûlée paired with sweet roasted onions, toasted pork jowl with seasonal mushrooms, a course showcasing six varieties of caviar and fish roe, mackerel crudo accompanied by summer tomato and anchovy foam, and slow-cooked sole in aged sake beurre blanc.
Enhance your dining experience with a selection of Spanish wines, featuring rare vintage Cavas and even mead produced in Spain.
For dessert, you might find seasonal delights such as lemon sabayon paired with lemon cake and curd, alongside a brandy-infused chestnut mousse. (Tasting menus are priced between $130 and $260, with wine pairings ranging from $164 to $600).
Deessa also hosts the hotel's renowned Sunday Lunch ($158 per person, which includes Cava and wine), making it an unmatched midday event for Madrid's elite.
It’s a sumptuous buffet featuring oysters, prawns, charcuterie, and cheeses, along with carving and serving stations offering classic dishes like beef Wellington and paella Valenciana. A delightful assortment of pastries and sweets rounds out the offerings.
For a delightful Sunday experience, indulge in brunch that invites you to linger for hours. Savor a selection of Spanish specialties while enjoying live music and attentive service, either in the dining room or on the terrace.
Pictura Bar
To access Pictura Bar, slip through a subtle door next to the concierge desk and stroll past a shimmering golden wall that evokes a gilded frame. Inside, you'll discover an exclusive, stylish haven adorned with velvet seating, Austrian crystal chandeliers, and bartenders in white coats. The photographic portraits by Paula Anta pay homage to the masterpieces of Diego Velazquez and Goya found in the nearby Prado.
You can choose from tasty bar snacks like ham croquettes ($22), hummus served with fresh crudités ($20), and pulled pork brioche topped with avocado cream and jalapeños ($26).
However, the true highlight is the cocktail selection. It features classics such as the house martini made with Tanqueray 10 gin or Grey Goose vodka ($20) and the Bulleit Rye Manhattan ($20). Alternatively, try one of the intriguingly named "forgotten" drinks like the Infante, which combines Entre Manos tequila, homemade orgeat syrup, and lime ($22). Each drink comes accompanied by a variety of snacks including spiced nuts and potato chips.
El Jardin del Ritz
Open daily from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m., El Jardin del Ritz is the hotel's outdoor dining venue overlooking Paseo del Prado. Its tables are nestled among greenery, with ample shade provided by umbrellas and trees.
The menu offers a more relaxed and international flair. Look forward to dishes like sea bass ceviche in leche de tigre ($26); elevated takes on classic Spanish favorites such as egg tortilla with shrimp and guindilla peppers ($22); and a variety of paellas ($66 to $96) perfect for sharing. You can also schedule a private paella cooking class ($191) to master the art yourself.

The Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid features a comprehensive suite of wellness amenities situated two levels below ground, accessible via a special elevator in Palm Court.
