Four decades after its stunning release, Purple Rain continues to resonate, showcasing that Prince’s iconic work is far more than an ’80s throwback—it’s a cultural landmark that endures. The film tells a fictional tale of a troubled musician, his tumultuous romance, and a band rivalry, and was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2019 for its “cultural, historic, and aesthetic significance.”
For years, the Minneapolis home featured in the film has attracted Prince enthusiasts, especially following his death in 2016. However, soon fans will have the chance to do more than snap pictures outside this pop culture landmark.
Airbnb has partnered with The Revolution, Prince’s band, to allow 25 groups a one-night stay in the actual Purple Rain house from the film. This opportunity is part of Airbnb’s new Icons program, which showcases “extraordinary experiences hosted by the greatest names in music, film, television, art, sports, and more.” Previous experiences have included viewing the Olympics opening ceremony at Paris’s Musée D’Orsay, staying in the X-Men mansion in New Castle, New York, and enjoying a Polly Pocket–themed sleepover.
Within the Purple Rain house, visitors will discover an exact replica of the Kid’s bedroom (the character portrayed by Prince in the film), complete with sheet music and instruments, soft lavender lighting, and a mural featuring eyes gazing down from above the bed.

The bathroom pays homage to the music video for “When Doves Cry,” featuring a claw-foot tub, stained glass windows, and luxurious purple robes along with lavender bath bombs.
Guests can also find a closet filled with ’80s-inspired outfits available for borrowing during their stay, complete with wigs, accessories, and eye makeup to finalize their looks. Iconic pieces include the original purple trench coat and the ruffled white shirt from the movie, which are showcased behind glass in the home.
As a tribute to the genre-defying legend, music is integral to the experience. There's a vintage ’80s stereo preloaded with tracks that inspired Prince, a lounge area filled with instruments and guides on playing the chorus of “Purple Rain” (along with pre-recorded audio featuring the Kid himself), and Prince's personal tape collection, which includes one of his demo recordings. Airbnb also hinted at a “secret door . . . leading to a room filled with treasures.”
“We aim for this space to offer fans a window into the vibrant world Prince crafted, allowing visitors to leave feeling a deeper connection to him as both an artist and a person,” said The Revolution bandmates, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, in a press release.
During their visit, guests can explore other filming sites around Minneapolis, such as the renowned First Avenue club, the Orpheum Theater, and Electric Fetus, which was Prince’s go-to record store. Additionally, they can enjoy the scenic views of Lake Minnetonka.
