Your ultimate guide to visiting Minneapolis for the first time
When people mention Minneapolis, most non-residents might say something like, 'Isn't Prince from there?' or 'I've heard they have many lakes.' Both statements hold true, but Minneapolis has so much more to offer beyond its iconic musician and beautiful lakes. Known for its frigid winters, each season in Minneapolis presents unique experiences and countless activities.
Every neighborhood boasts its own character, featuring a vibrant dining and arts scene throughout the city, along with that signature 'Minnesota nice' attitude that locals take pride in. This guide is tailored for those visiting Minneapolis for the first time.
Generally, the summer and fall seasons are regarded as the prime times to explore Minneapolis. Photo by Steve Skjold/ShutterstockWhat’s the best time to visit Minneapolis?
The debate over the best seasons in Minneapolis can spark joyful conversations or shared frustrations, especially when winter lingers into late April. Clearly, summer is the prime choice: patio season is alive and well, locals flock to the shimmering lakes of the Twin Cities, and the streets buzz with excitement, whether it’s a major concert or just a lovely Tuesday prompting everyone to grab a drink. Summer is undoubtedly the peak season.
However, I can’t overlook the sheer beauty of fall. The satisfying crunch of autumn leaves along a peaceful lakeside trail, inviting restaurants glowing with candlelight, and a reprieve from summer's heat—there's so much to adore about fall in Minneapolis. With the holiday season approaching, it can be as lively as summer, boasting equally delightful weather before winter sets in.
After New Year's, the pace slows significantly, with January through March being the quietest months. Still, winter offers plenty of activities, from winter sports to a vibrant arts and culture scene that thrives year-round.
How long should I plan to stay in Minneapolis?
A weekend in Minneapolis allows you to explore popular neighborhoods, enjoy the local dining scene, and visit some scenic highlights. With four to five days, you can delve deeper into the city’s beautiful lakes and waterways. If you can stay a week or longer, you'll truly immerse yourself in the culture and natural beauty of the area.
Is getting around Minneapolis convenient?
Minneapolis features an excellent network of bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly spots, but for areas that are more spread out, you'll likely need a car or public transit. After landing at Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport, you can easily rent a car or use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft. Alternatively, the Blue Line of the light rail (Minneapolis' metro system) takes you directly to downtown in about 20 minutes. Depending on where you’re staying, accessing buses or light rail is generally straightforward, though it may take twice as long as driving due to stops and connections.

Enjoy the views from Stone Arch Bridge
The Stone Arch Bridge is a symbol of Minneapolis. Once a railroad bridge, it has transformed into a popular pedestrian pathway spanning the Mississippi River from St. Anthony Main to downtown. Here, you'll encounter a diverse crowd, from tourists to long-time locals in their 80s. Please note that the eastern section of the bridge is closed for renovations until spring 2025.
Take a leisurely stroll around one of the stunning lakes
Known as the land of 10,000 lakes, Minnesota boasts over 22 lakes within the city of Minneapolis alone. Among the most frequented are Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet, both cherished spots just southwest of downtown near the Uptown and Linden Hills neighborhoods. Further north, you’ll find the quieter Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake, surrounded by beautiful homes that create a picturesque setting. Some of the finest lakes in the state are right within the city, and it's a must to enjoy them.
Enjoy a performance at a renowned Minneapolis venue
Minneapolis boasts an often overlooked music scene, featuring both local talents and numerous well-known artists who have graced the city over the years. Be sure to check the lineup at the iconic venue, First Avenue & 7th Street Entry, or simply stroll past its famous star-studded facade showcasing the names of legendary acts that have performed there.
Visit Minnehaha Falls
Minnehaha Falls, a stunning 53-foot waterfall surrounded by lush greenery, is an unexpected gem within city limits. Located in a 193-acre park just southeast of downtown Minneapolis, this beautiful spot feels like a remote getaway. It’s a year-round attraction, especially breathtaking when it freezes, allowing visitors to walk around it.

One of my absolute favorite pastimes in Minneapolis, no matter the season, is diving into the vibrant arts scene, especially in Northeast Minneapolis. The Northeast Minneapolis Arts District is alive with artist studios, galleries, and frequent open house events. Historic warehouses from the early 1900s have been repurposed into creative hubs for painters, ceramicists, photographers, sculptors, and more. Here, you’ll not only discover unique artworks but also encounter some genuinely friendly locals. I could endlessly explore the Northrup King Building, soaking in its present charm while contemplating its rich history.
I also strongly recommend visiting the Walker Art Center, a contemporary art museum, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, which is my personal favorite, showcasing an impressive collection of art spanning over 5,000 years.
What budget should I plan for during my trip to Minneapolis?

It's advisable to make dinner reservations in Minneapolis, particularly on weekends. Some restaurants gain popularity due to seasonal trends or because they are newly opened, making it challenging to secure a table without prior planning.
