Another holiday to Thailand in search of the "right location" of our next home and this time we chose Mae Phim Rayong. We were told it was quieter than Pattaya or Hua Hin and a fraction of the cost. So after a 15 hours flight to Bangkok via Zurich we travelled just over 3 hours in a private transfer (we always use "Enjoytaxibangkok" they are trustworthy, reliable and drive safely and will take you almost anywhere in the whole of Thailand)The apartment complex is divided into two halves Escape Condominium 1 and 2. We had booked an apartment via AirBnB. When we arrived about 3pm local time the place was so quite we couldn't see anyone. We eventually found the person with the keys and headed through the secured entrance up to the room via an elevator. The rooms were clean and just the right size and all the amenities were there for a family of four, if I had a complaint in would be the sofa was to small for a family of four to sit on and spread out as you do and more storage needed for clothes.Otherwise everything was fantastic, we had free parking, bike hire, access to a shaded pool, Jacuzzi, Private Gym, loungers and a Cafe/Bakery with friend staff and delicious food. The accommodation has a lovely well kept private garden leading up to the private beach only metres away with more loungers and parasols. The crystal clear sea was boiling and full of fish swimming around you using your shadow for shade. A 50m stroll in either direction of the beach were beachside Restaurants serving freshing caught sea food which was delicious and a restaurant called Tequila Sunshine which appeared in Tripadvisor. The food there was very cheap and affordable (I had a wonderful thick steak fillet meal for 450bht which roughly £10!! I had a similar meal in a restaurant within Terminal 21 Pattaya which cost 1500bht! Also the resident singer who was Thai is fantastic some of the songs she sang sounded amazing. Ironically for a place called Tequila Sunshine the cocktails were missing a few ingredients. So I loved the place but there were some issues we hadn't considered. My wife prefers the convenience of a modern world like Pharmacys and ATMs and Supermarkets which in Mae Phim are a taxi drive away rather than a long walk but there was a 7Eleven in walking distance but not on every street corner like the other parts of Thailand we have visited. Also no "Grab or Line" delivery service except for taxis. We did discover 7Eleven did a delivery service though. Also, and this was the deal breaker for my wife, no one sold or served Tea not even the 7Eleven except in the Tequila Sunshine restaurant. So after four days of tanning and swimming in 33°c temperatures, 26°c at night (but the aircon was excellent in the rooms) I was in heaven except on the fourth day I fell asleep on the sofa overnight and the insects in the accommodation, which I think maybe tiny red ants strung/bit me everywhere on my body literal hundreds of times. Which caused us to check out half way through our stay and move to the Veranda Residence Pattaya. Songkran was days away and we had very little choice of accommodation on AirBnB.So sadly Mae Phim Rayong will not be our new home. For my wife, it's just not developed enough. The pavements and sewer infrastructure were very run down and poorly maintained compared to more "tourist" developed areas. For me, it was heaven. Virtually Tourist free (almost like no one came back after Covid), relaxed, great food, great people, lovely atmosphere, great beaches (except for the plastic pollution which was terrible and unstoppable), soft sand and so cheap and the nearby islands are magical for snorkeling and scuba diving. So if like me, you don't mind your location being a little rural sea town with great beaches and fantastic snorkeling, cheap food, hell cheap everything! and a little bit more Thai than Tourist, Mae Phim Rayong is the place to be and apart from the insect infestation I would still recommend Escape Condominium Beachfront apartments the place is lovely and perfectly positioned.
