SummaryWe'd recommend the Bamboo house for one night specifically to the do the hike only. Go for the cheapest room.We booked two nights at the bamboo house, via Hotels.com, with the idea of hiking Mount Batur. Presumably like many other people visiting the area.We booked the king size deluxe room, the one with the triangular bamboo ceiling/roof, which was twice the price of a standard room. When we arrived we were shown to a standard room. After realising we hadn't been provided the room we paid for I enquired with the manager. After I released that both deluxe rooms were taken already, I suggested to him that we just stay in the provided room for the first night and in exchange we could be provided with some free drinks and food. This was well accepted. The reception staff (who are also the chef's and I think the cleaners!) are very kind and welcoming. The manager is also a very nice guy.The rooms are not materially different in our opinion between standard and deluxe. We would recommend you book the cheaper options.Water was clean, and hot. Linen clean. Mattress and pillows okay, but well used. Deluxe room had a very hard mattress. Standard room had a super soft mattress. The rooms were clean, considering they are made of bamboo.Considering the star rating and the area of the hotel it's just exactly as per expectations. I think they might need a better sign posting for the road/entrance which is off-road too.The outside court yard is reasonably clean, however is swarmed by thousands of flies (mid-September). It's not enjoyably to sit outside. It is not good news if the flies managed to get in your cabin! There are no fly prevention measures anywhere. The flies could of course also be in other hotels nearby. The food served is very simple, and took a long time to come, which usually okay, but we were getting harassed by the flies, so it was not okay. On a note it's probably on a par with what's in the area so no issue, however they should invest in the fly swat machines, a fly zapper or candles. The hotel is focussed with selling the hiking tours up mount Batur. The short trip is 350,000 IDR/pp, wake up 3:30am, set off 4am, back by 7:30am. there are other options for medium and long trips however these went up to double the price for only an hour extra hiking and did not seem good value considering this. The mountain is swarmed by people, bikes, and big 4x4s every morning and sounds like a loony toons car race for four hours every morning. Not exactly tranquil serenity at sunset as you may hope. We did not do the hike as we just wanted to walk it ourselves, at our own (fast) pace, and after doing research found the hike is over run by the 'mafia' (which aggressively demands money for taking the hike even though it's not legally required) and considering the expected hassle, we just let it pass, with also a view of the expected weather conditions at the time. The hotel is in an excellent position for the hike though if you are interested. Just perhaps not a second recovery night since the noise from 2am-ish of people gathering outside for 2 hours loudly chatting on top of noise at the volume of machinery made the extra night silly unless leaving at that same time.As with other hotels in this entire area. Having your own bike is a must.
