Guest house yanagiya was a delight. It was a interesting stay for me as it was my first time at a ryokan and as an American certain things were a little unorthodox... Like not being able to eat in the room and having very strict no shoe rules. I should have expected it but it was an adjustment and the host has been insanely accommodating and helpful. I plan on writing a longer review or blog at some point, but it was awesome and hard to describe. Very comfy and relatively cheap compared to traditional houses in the big cities.

2024/08/21~22Affordable, very clean, aesthetically cosy.InnkeeperThe innkeeper would sometimes be away, but there is a phone number on the counter that you can call and she would come in minutes. Since I'm a foreign tourist (not easy to get a japanese phone number), I had to use Skype to call her.The innkeeper is very thorough and sweet. She speaks just a bit of english and is quite patient in explaining things.BedroomI stayed in the shared bunkbed room. It's not air-conditioned but there were desk fans. Surprisingly, the room isn't too hot, especially since this was during midsummer, but I am also accustomed to tropical weather.Check-outThe innkeeper was away when I wanted to formally check-out. It seems that you can just head out without telling her, which the other guests also did. You can leave your luggage below the stairs if you wanted to stroll around the town a bit longer, but it will be unattended. I did leave mine until 3-ish.

Excellent hostel. Close to the station and in a lovely town. Very clean and modern facilities in a traditional house. The kitchen was well appointed and there is an izakya within a couple of minutes walk also. The staff were very kind and accommodating. I would stay again.Unfortunately I only stayed one night. The castle ruins nearby are interesting and have bilingual signage.

This place was great, had a good sleep on the tatami mat/futon and the place was well renovated with good showers and toilets. What made this place stand out is the attentiveness of the staff and the owner. He even drove us to Magome to do the hiking trail and picked us up every single time we came by train, sometime without us having specifically talked about this.

Yanagiya is very well maintained and clean guesthouse. The hosts - Hiromitsu-san and Shizue-san were very friendly & helpful. Mr. Hiromitsu was very kind to pick us up from & to Iwamura Station on the arrival & departure day. Iwamura is a quaint little village, however we only stayed there for 2 nights and don't have time to explore around Iwamura and we only had 1 full day to travel around Magome & Tsumago. Iwamura can be reached via Akechi Railway from JR Ena station (30 mins). Thank you once again to Mr Hiromitsu & Ms Shizue.
