We decided to spend a bit more money on a nice ryokan as a couple but the amount of money we spent did not meet our expectations at all. First of all the service staff were all foreigners but they were not well trained in hospitality, especially for a 4 star hotel. The interactions were awkward at times and they were unhelpful. For instance, at our kaiseki dinner, our server took off the plastic wrap from our sashimi right in front of us. He also said our salad dish was a wagyu which leads me to think he did not know what he was serving. At breakfast, they didn’t explain what we’re having at all. On the bright side, our room was spacious and quite nice with the private onsen and mountain view. Overall, the experience didn’t feel like an authentic ryokan experience and the service staff were not great. For the price that we paid and considering it was a 4 star hotel with good ratings, we were definitely expecting more. I wouldn’t recommend this to our friends or anyone for the price.

The room - amazing. Traditional Japanese room that they change during the afternoon from a living space to a sleeping space. A private onsen (hot spring) on a balcony overlooking the town of Hakone, which we constantly used. Delightful pyjama / kimono wear complete with those weird socks that only treat your big toe differently. The hotel itself is very chill, easy going, relaxing. We were a little apprehensive about this dinner with all of the reviews. But it was totally fine. I liked everything, my partner didn't like every single thing, but it was no big deal, we had loads of fun and engaged with the staff in a nice way about it all. Had a couple of beers and laughs with the bartender after dinner, all good fun.Staff very accommodating and very polite and professional. It's a little far from the train station, but again - it's no big deal. We walked it with big backpacks and were tired by the end, but a little exercise never hurts! Will come back if ever in Hakone!

It's fine to move around the building barefoot, but what about the tatami mats in the elevator? The only thing that seemed dirty was that it hadn't been replaced. Everything else is good, including customer service.

The staff was very nice. The private onsen was very nice. The bed was comfortable. The ventilation and air conditioning make a lot of noise at night, impossible to turn off the air conditioning at night because there is a lot of heat coming from the bathroom even with the doors closed.I didn't like the food very much, some dishes were too bland. At breakfast on my table I had a visitor 😅 (see video), fortunately it was at the end of the meal.

I have mixed feelings about this stay. Let's start with positive, the room with the private outdoor bath was lovely and the view of the mountain made it more peaceful and relaxing, which was the aim of our short stay. …

We stayed at the Hokone Airu for 2 nights and experienced traditonal dinners and breakfasts. The staff were amazing. Super friendly and service was great. We viewed one of the public onsens but never used because each unit has their own private onsen on the deck. The location was a short walk downhillto the Hakone-yumato station. We took the bus up the hill though. When you register you get to choose your dinner and breakfast times. The food was very good. Portions were generous. We rarely eat that much for dinner or breakfast!I highly recommend this Ryokan!
