The price was low but it was very clean!I was surprised that it was well-cleaned and the floor wasn't slippery even though the bathroom was shared 🙏🏼✨There was no running water or toilet in the room, so if you were staying alone, it was a hassle to have to lock and unlock the room every time you went to brush your teeth or wash your hands. However, considering the location and price, it was very convenient and nice 😻Also, there was delicious tea and Yatsuhashi in the room, which was a nice service and gave a feeling of traveling.

Pros:4 minute walk to the Kyoto station. Very clean. They let you keep your luggage before check in and after check out (I think only same day) for free. The ryokan we were in was very spacious with comfy futon beds, AC, mini fridge, strong WiFI, TV, locker and sink with mirror. The shared bathroom was no problem at all and if you are uncomfortable with onsen, there is a private bathroom which we never had to wait for. Free coffee between 7 AM and 9 AM. Vending machine with reasonable price for drinks and water. Affordable laundry service. Most importantly, the staff (owners I think). They were such lovely ladies. Super accomodating with always smile on their face and when we left, they gave us this fan which is my Japanese souvenir definitely.Cons:Honestly nothing. Usually I provide areas for improvement since any feedback is helpful to the owners and also to the customers but for what I paid to stay here, I found no problems at all. Keep in mind the door is locked between 6:30 AM and 11 PM so you cannot enter/exit between those hours. Also check in time is at 4 PM which could possibly be an inconvenience for people.

It's a great place to stay with friends, and the small bathhouse, yukata, and friendly service are a bonus.

This hotel is a time tunnel. The floor, sliding paper windows, bath equipment, washlet etc. everything are from a movie from 1950 or something. But they are spotless!! clean & well maintained unlike similar oldschool ryokan. If you don't mind the 23:00 curfew, stay at this Meiji building.

Stayed alone on Sunday. A few minutes walk from Kyoto Station. I paid 4,500 yen online, but please note that there will be an accommodation tax of 200 yen per person in cash (this is written when making the online reservation). Please note that check-in is at 16:00 and the entrance is locked from 11:30pm to 6:30pm. In the parking lot, there was a large parking lot right in front of us that cost about 2,000 yen per night.Smoking is not allowed inside the building, but there was a slight cigarette smell, but I think it is tolerable. There were about 10 showers in the basement bathroom (the men's bath), and the bathtub was large enough to make it awkward for two people I didn't know.It said that there would be coffee service from 7 to 9 o'clock, but there was no one drinking and there was no sign of it, so I couldn't confirm whether it actually existed.

This was really special experience. Virtually at the Kyoto station, yet still a bit remote and quiet. In the morning, we could bring our suitcases so we could freely explore the city. The kind ladies took them to the room in the meantime. The room was typically Japanese, with tatami mats and futons, sleeping robes, and slippers. In the room, there was tea, cookies, and running water. You hardly notice that there is no bathroom, as everything is nearby and very clean (extra slippers in the restroom:)). In the hallway, there is a space for evening reading and writing. We were sorry we stayed only one night. If we return to Kyoto, we will definitely come again. And this was the cheapest accommodation on our trip to Japan.

We loved our stay in Nihonkan! Coming from Tokyo, we had spent previous nights in more "western", more upscale hotels and honestly, Nihonkan was our favorite place of our trip. In the Ryokan, it is a more local and traditional experience, helping to immerse yourself more culturally. The rooms were small and basic, but honestly had all you need and were very cozy. Felt like being on a rhapsody. The owner were super friendly and even gave us super cute presents when we left. Great price-performance relation. Would 100% recommend! We had a private bathroom attached to our room, I guess I wouldn't be too much into showering with strangers.
