HYM Hostel has a beautiful aesthetic with a wabi-sabi design, giving it a minimal, rustic charm. However, the reality doesn't quite match the photos. The building is old feels abandoned and the sound isolation is poor, so expect a lot of noise from the nearby harbor and fish market, especially at night. As others have mentioned, the location is quite remote, and while it's only a 20-minute walk from the train station, the area feels isolated after dark. The shared bathrooms and showers are clean but basic. Overall, a visually pleasing place, but be prepared for some discomfort.

minimalist hotelIt is simple and stylish, eliminating bulkiness to the limit. The rooms are comfortable, and the common space available to hotel guests offers a relaxing view of the ocean. There is a cafe on the ground floor and a market next door. The seafood bowl at the market next door is also recommended. However, there is no toilet or shower in the room. I was a little scared of the unisex shower room, so I used Tamanoyu near Uno Station, and it turned out to be a great decision. The tap water in the room doesn't provide hot water, so it might be difficult in winter.

This is a stylish hotel in an old building that has been skillfully renovated. If you like the atmosphere of the RC hotel in Yasaka, Kyoto, you will like it.·placeIt is located about 10 minutes after getting off at Uno Station, facing the ferry terminal and walking along the road on the right. The building is older than I expected, but the inside has been skillfully renovated to take advantage of its age and is very stylish. It is convenient for sightseeing as it is very close to the ferry terminal for Naoshima and Shodoshima.Although I didn't use it this time, there is a hamburger shop and a cafe on the first floor. There is a market next door and a supermarket nearby. There are several restaurants on the main street, which is about a 5-6 minute walk.·check-inBasically, check-in and check-out were all done by myself, so I didn't meet anyone even once. There are also coin lockers, so you can leave your luggage there. There were about 6 large lockers in total.・Guest rooms, common areasThe rooms are very simple and have a good atmosphere. The only facilities in the room are a sink, refrigerator, kettle, and air conditioner. The taps only give water. The only amenities are towels, toothbrushes and hand soap. The toilet is located outside the room and is unisex. There are several shared lounges that guests are free to use.・Shower roomThere are four unisex shower rooms, and body soap, shampoo, and conditioner are also available. (There are no other amenities)There is a washing machine, dryer, and detergent softener, so you can do your laundry, but the machines were old. There is only one hair dryer. This time, I visited as a solo female traveler, but I cannot recommend it for solo female travelers.Because it's right next to the port, it's dark at night and there aren't many people. You have to be really careful when going out.The toilet and shower are outside the room and are shared by both men and women, so we were very careful about that. There was no security, so I had to lock the room every time I went to the bathroom.I used Uno Port, so the location was good. It's a simple space with no unnecessary things. Although it is a little inconvenient, I think it is good for those who can enjoy the design including that. The view from the window was very beautiful.

Pros:- Very near the train station, convenience stores, and the ferry terminal for the art islands :)- Since it's near the ferry, there's a beautiful view of the sea from the building when you look out the window- Very quiet vicinity, except when the fish market gets a bit loud during the mornings (did not bother me, tho!)- Lovely neighborhood and definitely a glimpse of a different side of Japan- Very nice building and seems very well-maintained (adaptive reuse that the hostel has given this place new life!)- 1/2 pro: Rooms and baths are very cleanCons:- 1/2 con: Having to go farrrrrr just to access the shared toilets- 1/2 con if you're not used to checking in without assistance, because the place is extremely quiet, so it feels a bit odd- While I loved the design intent of the place, having the industrial look sans the warmth of having staff around or other people (we went during a season without activity/socials in the building, even the supposed gallery in one of the floors was empty) felt a bit eerie at timesWould stay here if I choose to head out to Naoshima again out of convenience! Otherwise, might have second thoughts about staying because it's the type of place that'll make me just want to stay for sleep and basic things. It would've made a great stay if there were activities ongoing when we visited. Outside of that, the place just feels...cold. Might have been just the timing of our stay.

HYM is located in Dongshan Building, which was originally a building that had been idle for many years. Since it was rated as "this building is an art" by Okayama's art project "Okayama Art Corridor", it has been actively reused. Entering the interior, the style is industrial wabi sabi. The design is minimalist and the high ceilings and wide space make it very comfortable for the eyes. It’s hard to imagine that in the early days this place was an abandoned haunted house without ghosts. The way I described the haunted house, I knew how deserted it was.The first floor is the famous burger restaurant 8 WIRE and coffee shop BOLLADThere is a bar on the second floor, and a tattoo salon and silver jewelry store on the third floor.Next door is the fish market. You can also go there to see the prices at 6:30.It's a pity that the fish market was closed on the day I checked in.Showers and toilets are shared. There are 4 shower rooms on the second floor, shared by men and women. All rooms can overlook the Seto Inland Sea, and the top floor is very chill~Since there is no counter, CHECK IN (after 15:00) and CHECK OUT (10:00 in the morning) are all self-service. If you arrive early, there are coin lockers on the second floor, and you can store your luggage in the lockers first. No gates, very free.Access: 8 minutes on foot from JR Uno StationI chose this place because Uno is between Onomichi and Okayama. It was a harbor city in the past.It only takes 20 minutes by boat from Uno Port to Naoshima and Shodoshima in Kagawa Prefecture, which are famous as islands of art.It was a place I originally wanted to go, but gave up because of the limited days.
