Morinoyado Uwajima Youth Hostel, located in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, is the self-proclaimed "most difficult to reach inn in Japan." I think it takes about 30 minutes to walk from Uwajima Station.There were cars and electricity, so there must have been people there, but it's unclear whether it's actually open.Things to check.If you're staying the night, you should go in the evening before sunset. You can see the beautiful sunset over Uwajima Bay and Uwajima Castle from the nearby observation deck.

As for a walking henro this place is hard to get. Long climb after whole day of walking is not something you want. Place itself is clean, but dated and quite spartan. Wifi is available, but it did not reach my room, so I didn't used it much. If you wish to have european mountain hostel experience, this is the place. It's not bad, just not suited for lone walking pilgrim. Maybe a group with a car, but the road there is still quite narrow and wavy.

Truly quite the challenge to get to, but a fun ride, and fitting to be called the "hardest to locate youth hostel". But once you get there, it's a nice place, the staff are kind, rooms are nice, facilities are nice. They can make you breakfast for a small price and also have some rice and stuff to eat.How to get there: We had to call the place and ask for directions. Thankfully we speak Japanese, I don't think they can speak much English. Basically we had to get to a shrine, and follow directions based on blue signs attached to lamp posts or other places visible as you go along. There are parts of the road which are very dark and empty but it's pretty much a one way road so you can't make a mistake. It felt like a game locating the signs so I enjoyed it, though it was quite the scary ride.

This youth hostel is located next to Atagoyama Park, which was previously known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. If you exit the building and walk a little to the left, you will find an observation deck in the park with playground equipment. You can see Uwajima Castle beyond the alluvial fan.This facility is very difficult to navigate. The correct answer is to approach from the south side of the mountain.From the Lawson intersection in front of the station, head straight towards the mountain towards Daichoji Temple, and there will be a signboard after passing Daichoji Temple.I'm a local and have never used the facility, so I don't really know what the facilities are like.
