The meals are very special, you can see the chef’s concept behind everything. The hotel itself, the lobby, the lounge, and the atmosphere are great. The room is not as great as the hotel. I have high expectations for the room since the hotel is pretty expensive. The air con is not cool enough and they cannot do anything about it. The bed is not very comfortable and the pillows are too soft. Although the staff are really nice, I cannot say it’s a good stay.

Staying at Satoyama Jujo is an experience through and through. The beautiful surroundings in the wooded hills, the warm welcome by the smiling staff, the outstanding, breathtaking cuisine, the beautiful, exquisite rooms and the unique onsen are simply impressive. The hotel and the cuisine exude an incredible complexity without sacrificing authenticity and honesty. These are places that touch and move you!

The 2-day stay in Satoyama Jujo with the kindest and most caring staff you can ever imagine is unforgettable. We feel so fortunate to enjoy the incredible view of snow, the traditional japanese dishes, and the ‘绝景’ spring. We are planning a second vist. BTW, the morning tour from 8am to 9am definitely worth a try😚

This is one ryokan/Japanese inn/hotel that I’ll be back again and again. The philosophy and the story behind Satoyama Jujo are ones that I’m happy to support as a traveler who wants to minimise environmental impact while enjoying what Japan’s nature has to offer. The idea of growing herbs on site and purchasing from local growers are simply music to my ear. And I love how they used organic cotton with towels and pyjamas. You can tell the chef puts their heart and soul into turning simple ingredients into innovative yet humble dishes. The chef wasn’t trying to impress us with their technique but more importantly, they understood the nature of these local ingredients and worked with the knowledge, allowing them each to shine on the plate. The onsen was another example of letting the nature be the star of the show. The outdoor bath was an experience both during the day and in the evening with starry skies. The Mountain View felt surreal and I’d return for that onsen alone. On the way to the bathing area, you’d pass by an outdoor walkway with occasional grasshoppers and frogs as company. They are probably the best spokesanimal for Satoyama Jujo :)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5Review of Satoyama Jyujyo: An Unforgettable Mountain OasisI've stayed at exceptional boutique hotels across Japan and around the world, but Satoyama Jyujyo surpasses them all! Upon arrival, I was transported to a hidden mountain sanctuary, surrounded by lush greenery, meandering streams, and captivating wildlife—a true haven of tranquility. As a beer lover, the unlimited supply of perfectly chilled Suntory Premium Malts cans, immersed in a stone basin with flowing water 💦, brought immense joy. The 200-year-old main building exudes traditional charm, adorned with iconic mid-century furniture by renowned designers like Isamu Noguchi. The extraordinary rooms feature exquisite furnishings, while the ultimate luxury is a personal hinoki bath on the terrace. The highlight, however, is the daily rotation of two Rotenburo baths, offering surreal relaxation amid nature's beauty.Cocktail Hour treats guests to complimentary sake, Shochu, whiskey, local spirits, and snacks—an ideal way to unwind after a day of exploration. The culinary experience is a masterpiece, crafted by Michelin-starred chef Keiko Kuwakino. Her passion and humility create an unmatched dining experience. For a detailed account, read Robbie Swinnerton's review in the Japan Times. The rice served is reminiscent of the perfection found in a Romanée-Conti—nearly moving me to tears. Breakfast delights with farm-fresh tamago kake gohan (rice topped with raw eggs🥚), leaving you yearning for more.Satoyama Jyujyo may not be cheap, but it's worth every yen. For the epitome of luxury accommodations and unparalleled dining in Japan, it's a must-visit.My heartfelt appreciation to the staff for their unwavering commitment to omotenashi, creating an unforgettable and blissful experience. Satoyama Jyujyo is a remarkable gem.Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Satoyama Jyujyo. Your senses will thank you.#SatoyamaJyujyo #LuxuryRetreat #UnforgettableExperience #JapaneseHospitality

This place is exceptional. If you’re looking for something world class, with all the comforts, yet extremely “Japanese”, this is it. The hotel is a converted farm house, with an extraordinary attention to detail, but it retains rustic elements and timber details. The timber ceiling structure in the lobby is impressive! The baths are a highlight, if you like onsen, which I do! They have organic shampoo, conditioner and body wash from Australia available in the public bath, which is a luxurious addition. The artwork is all handpicked to match the mid century modern furniture, which compliments the overall theme in a very satisfying way.The food...wow! The food is unlike anything else I’ve come across. Most of the produce is either grown on the grounds, foraged from nearby mountains, or bought from farms within a 5km radius. They use traditional snow covered rooms to preserve food during winter, which I don’t think I have ever seen before. The kitchen team must be working tirelessly to provide the meals, which are presented more like works of art than a typical meal. I strongly suggest booking the dinner course.Honestly, I’ve been here in just about every season of the year, and I can’t decide which I prefer. Whatever season you find yourself in Japan, looking for a fabulous experience, you owe it to yourself to book a few nights here!
