I’ve stayed with Hideo and his wife Yukako before at their Kominka (old folk house with thatched roof) “Tokuheian”. I decided come visit again and stay at “Hinoki” their other kominka guest house a few doors down. It is also very old but the thatched roof has been removed and replaced with tin long ago. Still very beautiful and unique! They are about the same age (roughly 150 years old)Hideo has a big fun personality that will make everyone laugh and feel at home. He grew up in Keihoku and knows everyone and everything, he loves to converse but is also happy to let you do your own thing if you wish. Whatever your hobby or interest is they can point you in the right direction or even be your tour guide/driver for a nominal fee depending on the activity. He is very flexible and accommodating to your likes and dislikes.Yukako loves to cook seasonally and serve delicious authentic Japanese food. She is an incredible cook (used to be profession) making instagram worthy dishes nightly. Part time she teaches yoga and aerobics locally and is happy for you to join her biweekly class or even create an event for you. She can do private yoga on the top floor of Tokuheian under the exposed thatched roof :)Hideo is opening a restaurant across the street that specializes in wild game meat that he harvests himself and features vegetables they grow in the fields surrounding it. I highly recommend having them make a meal including deer / venison for your visit. It is a special delicacy in rural areas that you don’t really find in the cities. There are many great old shrines in the area including— “Kamo shrine”- very quiet and secluded. Nothing but woods and peace and quiet. And…almost no tourists so you can enjoy the scenery in peace! I’ve visited a few times now and would like to share seasons for things you may enjoying seeing while visiting rural Kyoto.Dec-Jan-Feb is snowy season. Keihoku gets A LOT. Very beautiful but, be prepared.March - Starting to warm.April- Cherry blossom season.May -Farmers plant the rice and weather is getting very nice.June - Firefly season, amazing sight to see!July - Harvest of summer veg. Tomato, cucumber etc. Means great food.August - Summer holiday, great time to swim in the nearby rivers or go canoeing.September - Still warm weather, Hideo harvests his grapes and figs.October - Harvest Festival. This is when rice is harvested and locals celebrate with food gatherings of all shapes and sizes.November - Colorful Leaves fall blanketing the forest floor. Very beautiful.Sorry for the long winded response but, Hideo and Yukako deserve it!

Thank you for taking care of our family of 5 and one dog. The building was an old farm building that was built over 150 years ago, but the owner had renovated it himself. It was very spacious and comfortable. The living room had a sunken kotatsu and stylish lighting, making it very cozy. I thought it was a futon, but I was able to sleep soundly on the low-type firm bed. The dog was also very happy to be able to spend time freely between the boards.I asked for toast for breakfast, and was treated to fig jam made by his wife. Thank you for the meal. The next morning, I took a nice walk with my dog around the elementary school just above and the shrine behind it.After checking out, I visited the nearby Joshokoji Temple. It was once the home of an ill-fated emperor, and is a quiet temple with a sense of history and dignity. It is famous for its cherry blossoms, but the autumn leaves were also beautiful. I would like to come back and stay again. thank you very much.

We stayed for one night as first-time users with 3 adults and 2 infants (3 years old and 1 year old). Since my children were young, I was nervous about the glass doors and sunken kotatsu, but they were very happy as they felt like exploring in the spacious house. The friendly and kind couple welcomed us and made us feel at home. We had a relaxing time. While my daughters were running around, I was able to do yoga with the gentle voice of the wife, which was very soothing~(*^^*) When my daughters are a little older, I would like to come stay again☆
