We loved our stay at Tsuruya. The ryokan building is very charming, and full of character. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, particularly the ladies that served our breakfast and dinner. Speaking of the food, the Japanese breakfast was totally wonderful, such a lovely experience eating this dressed in our yukata, that were in the room. And the room was lovely: spacious, tidy, clean, well-furnished, and the balcony with private onsen was such a treat. We would highly recommend you stay here. If you do, do also book the set dinner.

I made a reservation for a room that was listed on the website as having a mountain view from the window. However, when I entered the room, all I could see from the window was a wooden fence (about 190cm high) and the sky.An adult stood at the end of the room farthest from the window and could barely see the line above the mountain. The windows were so high that children and short guests couldn't see outside. As long as you sit and spend time in your room, the mountains are nowhere to be seen. When I opened the shoji screen, I saw a tall wooden wall in front of me.It was a dark room with no view of the outside, let alone the mountains.I couldn't believe that a room with only a small view of the outside from the high window was a room with a ``mountain view''.I think it would be a good idea to add a photo showing the outside scenery such as the mountains from the guest room window.I had such high expectations for the view from the room that I wrote ``I would like a room with a mountain view'' when I made the reservation, so I would not have made the reservation if I had known that it would have such a view.I wish I had been informed that the room had a view like this before I stayed.I talked to the landlady about this view, but unfortunately she didn't apologize and had a cold attitude. As other people have written in reviews, when you enter the entranceWhere is the lobby? Where is the reception? There was a shoe shelf and a desk next to the entrance. The inside of the building did not have the atmosphere of a ryokan, and the appearance of the ryokan seemed to be a bit different from the website. Also, after 10pm, I was unable to connect to the front desk, so I was told to use a landline phone only in case of an emergency, but I was worried that the staff would be unavailable at night. The food, both breakfast and dinner, was carefully prepared and delicious.

One of our most memorable lodging experiences anywhere. Beautiful facility, private open air bath in the room, beautiful breakfast, fantastic staff. Area is walkable and I regret that we were only passing through because I would love to visit Aso for longer.

This is the third repeat. You can receive matcha tea and sweets when you first check-in. It gently soaks in your tired body from traveling. The room I stayed in this time was called "Kobushi". I had stayed in the same room before, but it had been renovated for a while and had a sauna, jacuzzi, and cold bath!Especially since it was a very cold day when I stayed, the spring water bath was incredibly refreshing and it was really exciting to take a bath after the sauna 🤤We also use spring water in our baths, and the water is soft and feels great. As for the food, I was able to tell the companions in advance what they didn't like and they were able to accommodate me, which was very helpful. Since it was Seven Seeds Day, I was able to finish off the meal with Nanakusa porridge. It's nice to be able to eat seasonal foods even when I'm on the go. It was very delicious🙌There was a banquet for local people on that day. It’s nice to have a ryokan that is rooted in the local area 😎However, perhaps due to this, I was concerned that the rooms were being cleaned up late and there was some noise echoing in the bedroom.I think this depends on the structure and location of each room.

Fantastic atmosphere and service. If you're looking for a high-quality, traditional ryokan experience near the beautifully (now fully re-opened) Aso Shrine, then this is the place for you.First of all, being one of the few hotel/inn options within walking distance of the cultural street and shrine is a huge boon. Being able to walk along Monzenmachi wearing yukata is a fulfilling experience. The rooms are very clean and have great updated amenities; the private sauna and outdoor deck baths in the large suite are wonderful--and there was even a very comfortable outdoor lounge! The food was delicious and atmosphere excellent, what you'd expect of a ryokan and more. The staff is very courteous, attentive, and helpful. The matron of the establishment in particular is very kind, and can speak a little English to make your stay more comfortable if your Japanese level is not up to par. There is also a lovely bar/lounge with nice acoustics that is currently not open as such, but you can have your evening meal in that cozy environment if you so choose. I truly hope to see it re-open as a full bar someday. For me, this establishment is a 5/5 with no memorable complaints. The price you pay absolutely comes with the quality experience it entails.
