Our absolute favorite stop on the Kohechi route of the Kumano Kodo. The ryokan is really nice and the food is fabulous. The dinner is truly delicious, made with lots of local vegetables. We were grateful that dinner was different from previous stops, which offered more of the same. The hosts are really kind. We highly recommend staying the night here - you won’t regret it!

Free-flowing hot springs and healthy mealsI was drawn to it and stayed there.Family-run by a young couple and the landlady. They serve customers.Everyone here has a kind demeanor and is very likable. As for the meal, the mushroom hotpot was better than expected. It's delicious, and next time I go I'll order a larger portion.I'm planning on pre-ordering it.The hot springs are fed directly from the source and have a slight sulfur smell.I will.I think it's a pH issue. Is the faucet oxidized? It was discolored. It's proof of a real hot spring.I thought so.However, this hot spring is drinkable. There is a hot spring pot in the lounge.Tea and coffee are available for drinking. It seems that the rice for the meal is also cooked in the hot springs. The unique color and texture are unusual and delicious.Saturday, September 28, 2024 RevisitHealthy meals and quality hot springsI was drawn to it and visited again. This time, we will introduce mushrooms and vegetables from the mushroom hotpot.I had the amount increased. The other dishes were also consistently delicious. The hot springs are nice, both indoor and outdoor. It's warmer than you think, so take a bath.Even after getting up there, I can't stop sweating.Do not take a long bath as you should not touch the hot water.I think it's safer not to do so.

We had the most wonderful time at Ebisu-so in Totsukawa Onsen. I have lived in Japan for 6 months and have been to many ryokans and hot springs, but this is one of the best I have ever experienced. The accommodation was perfect, clean and spacious. The hot springs were incredible and since it was an open air bath we could see the stars at night and the sun during the day. The landlady spoke perfect English and was very kind and helpful. They told us about nearby waterfalls, hiking trails, and rivers where you can kayak. They also provided a perfect dinner and breakfast. The meal was perfect and very tasty made by her and her husband. Everything was locally sourced, caught, or homemade. My father and I are very grateful for our time at Ebisuso and hope to come back and let everyone enjoy an experience like this. Thank you for the unforgettable time. I made a reservation for May 11th the week before and stayed there with my 74-year-old mother and her sister. This is just my mother's subjective complaint.Although the price was not cheap, there were fewer dishes and fewer side dishes. As a result, by the time we had breakfast, we had leftover rice and no pickles, so when we asked about it, we were told that they don't serve pickles.Hmm. It seems like it's a family business, but my mother and I have experience running family-run restaurants, so I'm wondering. That's what it seemed like.

With much delay, I post our review of the two days we stayed at Ebisu. It was one of my best experiences in Japan (I visited 4 times), so this will be a long review. My partner and I stayed for two nights while walking one of the Kumano Kodo trails. The owners are a young couple who run the place together with his mother. Even a month before our arrival, the owner was very present in email communication, which I appreciated. When we arrived we felt immediately at home, although the owner doesn't speak English he had prepared sentences to explain to us how the structure was organised, it was a very nice gesture..The facility is very cosy and quaint, very clean, roomy room, the thermal baths quite spacious, the water at Totsukawa is fantastic. We dined there both days, the dining experience was really exciting, the dishes they presented to us were very well prepared, tasty, genuine and local, we were really pleased. In addition, the owner speaks a little English and took great pains to explain the dishes we were served. We ate rice cooked in thermal water, which was a new and very interesting experience. Also, there was a very tender little episode, on the first day after our arrival we went on foot to visit Tamaki Shrine, the owner drove us to the trailhead and lent us a map. We spent many hours walking around and returned on foot when it was getting dark. Moral of the story, the owners got worried and sent their mother to look for us in the car... we were very sorry to have worried them, but it was like being part of the family.I don't know if I will go back to Japan again, but I would certainly go back to Ebisu, and I wish the owners a lot of luck and happiness, because they are two beautiful people who deserve the best.

Incredible inn, conveniently located for those doing the Kohechi segment of the Kumano Kodo (~1.5km from the trail). The service was kind and welcoming, the outdoor onsen was great, food was delicious (dinner was basically a 5 course meal with hotpot and lots of little tasting dishes). The wife speaks some English which made everything easy. Highly recommend!
