I wanted to go fishing in Yamagata Prefecture, and I wanted to process the fish I caught, so I searched for a place to stay and ended up staying at this minshuku for 5 nights.The owner is a local angler and is very knowledgeable about fishing in Shonai, so we were able to fish in Tsuruoka and Sakata.Additionally, Atsumi Onsen has three public baths. You can enter for 200 yen or 300 yen. However, it is very hot, so you need to be prepared.

My mother and I stayed at Uenon’s house and while two nights was far too short, we enjoyed every second of it! He is a lovely host, and while his English is limited, he can use Google Translate well to communicate to his guests. He can pick you up from the station. His home is nestled in the mountains with beautiful views. Uenon also drove us up to sekigawa to visit my relatives. He is a lovely kind, generous, humble and loving man. He will prepare traditional, UNESCO-cultural, local, nutritious meals for you if you book in advance. Some foods may be foreign to most travellers, but we ate everything anyway! We feel like it’s a second home from home and would recommend staying here if you’re in the area.

Ueno-san lives and works here. It is a nice place which he recently turned into a guest house in 2018. It is secluded, near the Atsumi Onsen. It is a nice place to get away from crowds and city life and enjoy the nature of northern Japan. Ueno-san prepared delicious dinner and breakfast for me and taught me how to prepare goma-tofu, a local specialty. We had great conversation around the table, and he is proficient with Google Translate. This was helpful for me, as I do not speak Japanese. There is a nice restaurant next door, and several places to go within walking distance. I recommend checking in while still daylight, it is hard to find at night, but the host will greet you outside. Accommodations are available through several platforms but their private website has the best details about the experience here.
