This traditional Japanese inn is off the main Nakasendo trail - you will need to access by car. The valley is beautiful and the half board dinner is skillfully prepared. The meals are the highlight of the stay. I suggest avoiding a cold weather visit. The rooms are heated by old kerosene heaters and are not well ventilated for the buildup of chemicals and smoke. We had irritated, very swollen eyes in the morning. If this had been a warmer period stay, this review would be higher. Also be aware that there is just one shared bathing chamber for several inn rooms. The rooms are authentic to this period inn, but dated. It is a bit pricey, compared to other Nakasendo inns, given the rooms and amenities.

We stayed here for 2 nights after hiking the Nakasendo to relax and enjoy the local hikes in the area. They offered to pick us up at Agematsu station as it started to rain pretty bad after our final hike. The owner is very sweet and she greeted us with warm tea by a little fireplace in the entry hall. We told her that we had brought some food and she was more than happy to let us use her barbecue facilities to make our own meal the first day. They even gifted us a fish caught by her husbands friends that we could grill! The room we got was spacious and we were able to fit everyone in one room (5 people). The place is an older type ryokan so it has some wear and tear, but that was to be expected. It got a bit cold in the late days of October. However, there is a heater and lots of duvets and blankets. The bath is a great bonus after a day of hiking, but she has to prepare it so it won’t be available at all times. Just make sure to ask about bath times and she will try to accommodate as best as she can.We ended up taking the dog for a walk in the early morning before hiking to Akasawa. The people in the area are also very kind and helpful, and if you seem a bit lost they will try their best to help you!We had breakfast and dinner the second day and it was really nice. Classic Japanese breakfast with miso, rice, sour plum, sweet potato and fish. The dinner was a mix of soup with locally caught fish, tofu and a lot of vegetables.Overall a great stay! I will definitely visit again if I find myself in the area!

We had a very special stay in this traditional ryokan. The hosts were so kind and helpful. The food was delicious and we cooked some of it ourselves over a grill, which really added to the experience. The view of the mountains from our room was gorgeous. We got picked up from agematsu by the host, after a day exploring the Agasawa national forest, highly recommend it all!
