We stayed one night at Shimosagaya in Tsumago and had a restful stay.Don’t expect a luxurious resort but if you are looking for an authentic experience this Ryokan will provide that.Of the three Ryokans we stayed at during our two weeks trip to Japan, this is where we slept the best. We took the dinner and breakfast package and the food was good. The hosts speak little English but are very friendly and nice.We are a family with two boys.

It’s a lovely and homely guesthouse, right in the center of Tsumago, a perfect starting spot for beautiful walks. The family is so sweet and caring, and the food is really good! Next to that, the bathroom is super clean and the bath itself felt like a mini-onsen.You’ll sleep easily with a view on the mountains and the sound of the river closeby. Also the busstation is around the corner, really easy!Again many thanks for staying here, we’ve had a lovely time!

The building was originally a row house, but was disassembled and restored. This is a type of two parallel floor plans with a single earthen floor typical of the residences of the common people of Tsumago-juku. …
