It was a highly traditional experience to stay at Shimaya - a true ryokan. A most welcoming host who spoke some English - he drove guests for free to the snow monkey park in the morning. Good value, simple breakfast, a quiet place. Good selection of restaurants nearby.

I saw an advertisement in front of Yudanaka Station and took a day trip to the hot springs. It's 500 yen. When I was drinking the water I bought at the hotel after taking a bath, I was so nervous that I thought I couldn't take a break. Are you telling me to go home? When I asked him, he didn't say that. He just keeps saying he just said he couldn't take a break. If that's the case, shouldn't they advertise day-trip hot springs at the station? It feels really bad.Don't Japanese people care about preferential treatment for foreigners? I thought.I never want to see this person's face again.By the way, Kaede no Yu in front of the station has a rest area for 300 yen. This one is definitely better.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience staying here! The rooms were very large and comfortable and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. It was exactly what we needed on vacation. The owner of Shimaya is extremely welcoming and kind, he drove us to the monkey park, and the breakfast he prepared in the morning was always the highlight of our day!Absolutely not to be missed. One of our favorite places we stayed on our month long trip.

The hotel owner couldn't be nicer! He is extremely courteous and helpful. His enthusiasm for the monkeys is intoxicating and he even personally drives you to the Snow Monkey Park! The hotel itself is traditional, clean and cozy, if a bit worn. The rooms are nice and well equipped. You have a great view of the surrounding mountains from the balcony. The onsen is clean and very hot!My personal highlight were the messages/drawings from previous guests hanging in the stairwell. Everyone praises the hotel, the owner and the Snow Monkeys, and rightly so!Easily accessible from the train station.

Wonderful and welcoming place. The man who ran it was very accommodating and helpful. His son also gave us a free ride to the monkey park which was very much appreciated. This place has a charm you don't see at very many places anymore. Highly recommend.

The accommodation was amazing value for money. The futons were very comfy with the pillows were soft. There are three indoor hot springs you can use: one private, one public for men and another public for women. …
