Update: someone from the hotel called me one day after review, instead of apologizing, told me you deserve to sleep in a shared room, beds separated with curtains and with 100 more people!Comment from 10.10.2024:0. Broken TV is the least you face, there are bigger surprises:1. Trash-Can is exactly in front of the entrance and always full, I saw filthy rats both nights having party there... What a nightmare.... This was the first time I saw rats in Germany in 7 years and exactly in front of this hostel, congrats on the high hygiene.2. One standing shower for ~20 rooms! No shower gel/shampoo, no cloth hanger, water cannot drain, you need to stop shower every 3-4 minutes and wait until the dirty water drains slowwwly.3. One super dirty microwave and fridge located in the main hall, shared among all people -> so you see a lot of strangers (which are not guests and MAYBE are from other floors that use it, even in the middle of the night!). So, it was even better if those facilities were not there at all.4. Some guests yell in the middle of night, and smoke inside the room with open window and there is no manager who you can complain to (self-checkin hostel).

The location is quite good, you have direct access to the main station and elsewhere using public transport. When we entered the house it smelled like cold cigarette smoke. It says everywhere that smoking is forbidden, but neither guests nor staff seem to care about this. The room was okay... there was a shower but no toilet in the room. Unfortunately, we didn't dare to use the shower because the floor was already cracked and this mobile shower cubicle somehow didn't seem so stable. So the communal shower had to be used. This one was so-so.It was definitely noisy and it was also slightly annoying. Cleanliness in the room...well, it's okay. There were cobwebs on the windows and down in the corners.I wouldn't necessarily recommend the hostel.

Overall, a positive mixed impression, some of the rooms are very simple from the 1960s, but most of them have been nicely modernized in a Scandinavian style. Some rooms have shared bathrooms and outdoor toilets, loud dishwashers, you should pay attention to this beforehand. Our rooms were absolutely clean, but actually VERY noisy to the hallway (thin doors, when guests come at night or have to go outside to the toilet, can be clearly heard) and to the side rooms. Relatively quiet at the back, a main road with a tram at the front, and a background of noise despite the insulated windows. There is currently no breakfast offer, there is actually a nice room downstairs at the reception, unfortunately no bar in the evenings. Am Freistein tram stop a few minutes away, 3 stops to Essen main station. Good WiFi, reception and service friendly and attentive (but not in the house in the evening/night, that's actually not possible when it's full). Overall, it's ok in this category for the budget range in Essen, but the doors really need to be modernized. No air conditioning in summer.Apart from trade fair times, accommodation in Essen is more comfortable and quieter in the price range of €60 for two people, with breakfast, lounge and bar in the evening, but above all with night reception and supervision.

Walls thin as cardboard, you felt like you were sleeping in a train station foyer. As a result, sleep was in short supply.Originally we wanted to travel as a group of three, but due to illness we only arrived as a group of two. We paid for a three-bed room and only got a two-bed room. My point is that if I paid for three, a discount on the breakfast I booked later would have been nice. But the breakfast also left a lot to be desired. For breakfast there was gray scrambled eggs. Hunger drove it in, which later had bad consequences for us.

I have no idea where the pictures come from or where these rooms are.My room was very spartan and clean was not lacking. Maybe some screws on the folding table could be tightened. But otherwise my room had no resemblance to any of the ones shown on the homepage.

I have no idea how the hostel got an overall rating of 4.2 stars. 2 is actually too high, but the location is fine and the colleague on the phone was friendly. The walls are made of cardboard, every conversation on your own floor sounds as if it were taking place in your own room. Some inconsiderate people keep slamming the doors and getting a decent night's sleep is out of the question. Without the 3 per mille and my noise canceling headphones, I probably wouldn't be able to get any sleep. And all of this at a really outrageously high price. No thanks
