I am still staying here and I can highly recommend it! The room I have is comfortable, clean, bright and roomy! Better than the more expensive places I have had to stay at recently. It has a nice homely feel too. Rooms are nicely heated as of autumn (though I have turned off the heaters and opened the windows. Despite being from Australia, it's too warm for me 🥵). Not sure if the staff speak English as I have not tried. So far I'm getting by with my 'mittelmäßiges' Deutsch... and no one has requested (so far!) that I stop butchering their language, haha. Food is very good, but a bit expensive for my budget. Having said that, it's probably normal for this region: not to mention that everything has become more expensive in the last couple of years. I did treat myself to one meal though. I enjoyed wild deer ragout last night, which apparently the chef hunts and prepares himself. So definitely worth paying a little extra for that. It was served with Spätzle and salad. The icecream is also made locally. Can definitely recommend the coffee flavoured one... tasted like a good quality tiramisu (the sorbet was a bit flavourless and icy for my liking, but maybe it was just that batch). Staff are friendly and helpful. The location is perfect if you have a car but, even if you don't, there's a bus to and from the Freiburg Hbf that runs regularly, even on Sundays. Takes about half an hour including walking to the bus stop. If you have the Deutschlandticket anyway, it costs no extra. Finally, it was well worth staying in Wittnau to avoid the higher prices in Freiburg and to be able to retreat to nature at the end of the day!

The food is great, very familiar, great breakfast, only the rooms need a renovation. 😉 Otherwise everything was great and can only be recommended.

We have actually been loyal to the deer for many years. A form of hospitality was still celebrated here that is unfortunately increasingly threatened with extinction. …

In the immediate vicinity and in the neighboring towns you can find a few home-style inns, although Schniposa and Co. don't go outside the box. Huge portions at reasonable prices. So what, unfortunately, many still want. It is clear that the food quality does not have to be as high. Not so in Hirschen Wittnau. Apart from the idyllic terrace, cozy dining room and incredibly nice ladies in service, you can enjoy good home-style cuisine of a high quality here. There is therefore no shortage of large portions here. In addition to the classics, there are some seasonal and, above all, regional specialties of high quality and fine preparation. Above all, the game dishes made from local or Hexentale game meat. I once ate a large, very fresh and colorful summer salad with perfectly fried, juicy sweetbreads. Which country inn already has this? The changing weekly menu is creative, but never up to date on the website! (Addendum: perhaps it has changed since then). In the meantime, since around the time after Corona, the menu has unfortunately become a bit more in the direction of all other middle-class inns. The colorful large salad with wonderfully fried sweetbreads nuggets or similar eye-catcher weekly menus that I loved in summer have not been around for a long time. You also have to be very lucky that the side dish is homemade. In my opinion, the croquettes and duchess potatoes come from the frozen bag and unfortunately for me they were always fried too often or for too long, and the fat no longer seemed fresh. It's a shame, that used to be much better. The generosity of the sauce, however, is worth highlighting. Finally an inn that doesn't skimp on the sauce but instead serves a traditional, full gravy boat with the plate. Top!!!The rooms at the inn are simple, very clean and great! The breakfast was sufficient and varied, as our family members who stayed there reported.Very friendly, child-loving service. Requests are received in a friendly manner and, of course, implemented.I always enjoy coming with the family, even though we live next door and I always prefer to cook myself. All in all a very warm and friendly family business! Mother in service, father in the kitchen and son everywhere a man has to lend a hand! Hopefully keep it up for a long time!

POSITIVE:uncomplicated processingFriendliness and serviceFree parking in the inner courtyardNice roomsClose to FreiburgNegative:5 points that could be implemented with little effort and cost-effectively, but would significantly increase guest well-being and satisfaction.1. Fly screens on the windows. In summer the rooms on the upper floors are terribly hot. So you can only sleep with the windows open. After being sucked almost dry by gnats, I spent most of the night in the car.2. TV flickersNo pleasure to look at like that3. Cleanliness of the showerUnfortunately the shower cubicle is not clean.4. Breakfast selectionMaybe add granola bread, cake or something tasty5. Mattress a bit softAs you can see, 5 points that are easy to fix. 5 little things that add up to a lotUnfortunately, without the positive implementation of the points mentioned, I cannot recommend the accommodation.
