Unfortunately we were told to send an email to the manager with these points which we did, and haven't heard back, so here is our review:We booked into one of the basement rooms. Firstly, we loved the look of the hotel and the staff were very polite and professional but we were however, very underwhelmed and disappointed with the room we stayed in due to the black mould found in the room and also the noise disturbance for most of the late night into the early morning (the hotel is attached to a bar). I have since seen on various reviews that guests were advised beforehand that the room may be noisy, which we weren't. We also were not offered ear buds because of the noise which it seems others were when we rang reception very early morning to say we were struggling to sleep.The staff seemed surprised when we checked out when we informed them of the mould in the room, so I have attached pictures.We obviously expected a level of damp/smell due to the position of the room, however it was very overwhelming and when we returned after our meal and got ready to sleep we quickly could see all of the mould around the room, mainly in the toilet and shower area, but it also ran along the bottom of the walls.Another point to mention that wasn't huge, but we asked at reception when we checked in for a bar of soap for the toilet to be told they had none? So we had to go and buy some hand soap for the room to be able to wash our hands after using the loo which again, isn't very luxury- the soap dish was just left empty. The member of staff that checked us in also removed some cleaning spray that was left in our room when she let us in.It was our night away from home and our 2 young children so as you can imagine, we were looking forward to a lovely stay after travelling 2 hours from Burnley. We could have put up with the noise as it did seem to settle at around 3am but sleeping in a mouldy room is just a step too far.We totally understand that everyone has their own tastes and you can't please everyone but black mould is dangerous and needs to be addressed. We would have been happy to move to another room but unfortunately none were available for us to move into when we called early morning after trying to get some sleep.With the complete lack of response or acknowledgement from the manager I would recommend avoiding this hotel.

Absolutely stunning place, everything about our stay was fabulous. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble, will definitely be returning in the near future to try out some of the other rooms.

Perfect from the moment we walked in. Had the most amazing smell throughout. Easy check in and even got to choose a handmade soap. Room was beautiful and cool given the heat in York on the day. …

Was impressed by the photos online before I booked the room. This hotel didn’t disappoint. |Greeted on entry and taken upstairs to the reception. Everywhere was dark and I remember saying how the place had a nice smell about it. …

Absolutely gorgeous hotel. Very unusual but amazing. Staff are fantastic. We stayed in the Spectator room. There is no breakfast facilities but they do offer free pastries delivered to your room.

What an incredibly unique and charming hotel. The location is ideal for exploring York, as everything is conveniently within walking distance. There are numerous delightful cafes, restaurants, and bars in the vicinity as well.Do not let any reservations about staying in the basement deter you, as there is a certain excitement in waking up to a beautiful sunny day upon stepping outside. The attention to detail in our room (The Vault) was exceptional, with charming quirks to discover throughout our stay. It is refreshing to stay in a hotel that is not part of a large chain, offering a more personalized experience compared to the standard boxy rooms.Additionally, the staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, making our stay even more enjoyable 🤩

Thank you to the lovely staff for a Magical stay at the Alice In Wonderland quirky but Uber Stylish IMPOSSIBLE MOTEL! This plush little gem, brilliantly located, will best suit those of a theatrical and adventurous nature who prefer a mildly Gothic, Rock Star setting to a bland corporate hotel.

I stayed at The impossible Motel last weekend and will absolutely return soon! Can't say enough good things about it. Its beautiful, dark and proper quirky.Just what I like in a hotel. We met the manager Nick when we checked out and he offered to show us round some of the other rooms, I'm nosy, it was brilliant and proper impressive. If you're going to York, Stay here. i've stayed at a lot of hotels in York, Some good some average. This is neither. Rebecca Fielding x
