Re-open with new owners and back to being a really good, friendly and welcoming pub. Even better now that the summer nights are coming - we can sit out in the sunshine with a beer again!

Loved it. Perfect location. Lovely comfortable room. Tea and coffee with fridge and coffee maker. Lovely vegan and vegetarian breakfast. Bar is very nice with nice decor. The shower was lovely and hot. My room was in a perfect spot to watch over the square. The were also kind enough to let me put my bike just inside the building overnight but there are bike spaces just outside on the square. Lovely helpful staff.

Nightmare when trying to book a room and trying to enter the property. I wanted to ask a question prior to booking online. All phone numbers are answer machine only. They offer a call back but this is rubbish because no one calls you back. I had an early start at Bristol airport so I gambled and booked one night. Upon arrival, the place was dark and looked very shut up for the winter. No one there to meet you. Tried to use the keycode given to me in an automated email, but it didn't work. Tried upward of ten times. Repeatedly called the phone number on the door but was repeatedly directed to answer machines. So stuck outside in the cold and dark. Eventually someone replied on my phone. Attempted again to use the door entry code but it failed to work. However after a few more goes the door suddenly opened. Voila!Later I met another couple stuck outside trying to get in. It was only the fact I was going out that I was able to let them in.The hotel is however right in the village square. The Butcombe Brewery Lamb Inn in the same square is the place to go for a beer and food.

Had a delicious family meal at The Oakhouse in Axbridge. The Sunday Roast chicken and beef and the vegetarian Wellington were lovely and clean plates all around. It was good that there were also menu choices other than Sunday Roasts available. We also all had desserts, which were again delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. We'd definitely go again.

We stayed for 1 night. Very friendly and polite staff. We had to change rooms as there was an issue with the original one, this was arranged after some confusion but the extra bed had not been made up, staff stated there was no one available to do this so I had to go back to the old room and get the bedding and do this myself. The evening meal was not good at all, I had a cheese burger which was advertised as a fresh steak burger, this it was not! Tasted like a cheap frozen pattie which was very under cooked.Shame as the hotel has potential.

Never again.Arrived in "reception" to find no staff on the premises and no obvious sign of a key to my room, or even anything to suggest which room I would be staying in. I use the term "reception" lightly because reception was in fact behind a locked door, so I was really just stood in the entrance hall. I waited around for a while until another guest came downstairs and realised that myself and another guest who arrived shortly before me were without keys. Technically the other guest arrived after me, but when I got to the front door it was locked, as was the other front door, and all the lights were off, and it was chucking it down outside so I went back to my car and waited for someone else to gain entry. Turns out there's a code to get in, but I didn't have that because my place of work booked the room for me. Anyway, the guest who already had his room key kindly went back upstairs and got us the info sheet from his room and I called the duty manager on the number provided. I explained to her that we arrived to find everything locked and no keys to speak of, "well that's not very helpful" was her short but accurate response. Anyway, she did say she was 5 minutes away and, to be fair, she arrived promptly. She unlocked the door to reception and said she'd check what was going on with the system. Well, I can tell you what was going on with the system as far as I was concerned; my key was left in an envelope with my name on it on the table inside the front door (I know this because the helpful guest knew my name from said envelope) but it wasn't there when I arrived. It turns out, someone else had helped themselves to my key and set up in my room. Their loss in a way, because to keep things simple we switched rooms and I got an upgrade, although all that really meant was I got to go up an extra flight of stairs, but apart from that the TV didn't work and the curtain was only half on the rail, so it didn't feel all that special.Whilst downstairs I learned that the bar/restaurant no longer open unless there are weddings or events and that breakfast is not served in the restaurant. When I got to my room, I found breakfast on the dressing table in the form of 2 pots of instant oats and a small jar of jam. Whoopy doo for that!I've stayed at this hotel multiple times over the last 8 years or so and until now always enjoyed the hospitality and especially the food. I would have recommended it to anyone. That's all gone now, and I couldn't recommend it any less.I give it 1 star overall because there was a room for me, and the room did have a bed, so it can't really be zero, but it's not far off. The room gets 2 stars, 1 for the bed, 1 for the bathroom which has a decent walk in shower. Service gets another 1 star because if it wasn't for the missing key there would have been no service at all, and location gets 2 stars because it's not too far from where I need to be, but it isn't worth the journey.Ironically, while I was in my car waiting for someone else to turn up and show me the place was indeed open, I read a few reviews and I genuinely thought I'd either looked at the wrong place on google or the people leaving the reviews were talking about somewhere else.Shame, because it used to be a great place.
