Preheat the grill (or grill pan) to medium-high heat and lightly grease the surface with oil.

In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook gently, stirring often, until they're caramelized and deeply brown, about 15 minutes. In a separate small skillet, heat the cream cheese over low heat until it softens and becomes spreadable.

Grill the hot dogs until they're evenly browned. Toast the buns lightly on both sides.
