Simple and Savory Sicilian-Style Meatloaf

1 ½ pounds lean ground beef

½ cup dry bread crumbs

1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix

¼ cup barbecue sauce

1 clove garlic, minced

1 egg

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

8 thin slices deli ham, or as needed

1 cup shredded Swiss cheese, or as needed

¼ cup ketchup

1 teaspoon mustard

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 dash soy sauce
Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lay a 24-inch piece of parchment paper flat on a clean surface.

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion soup mix, barbecue sauce, garlic, egg, flour, and black pepper. Stir until well mixed. Spread the mixture onto the parchment paper and shape it into a 10x16-inch rectangle. Lay ham slices on top, leaving a 1-inch border all around the meat. Sprinkle Swiss cheese over the ham.

Carefully lift one edge of the meat mixture using the parchment paper and roll the meat up, folding it over the ham and cheese filling. Seal the ends and edges tightly. Transfer the meatloaf to a 9x13-inch baking dish, discarding the parchment paper.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

While the meatloaf is baking, mix together ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and soy sauce in a bowl until the sugar dissolves. Once the meatloaf is done baking, spread the sauce mixture over the top and return it to the oven. Bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the center reaches a temperature of 160°F (70°C) when checked with a thermometer.
