Wonton Soup Recipe
Ingredients List
For the Wontons:
-
½ pound boneless pork loin, coarsely chopped
-
2 ounces peeled shrimp, finely chopped
-
1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine
-
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
-
1 teaspoon brown sugar
-
1 teaspoon finely chopped green onions
-
1 teaspoon chopped fresh ginger root
-
24 (3.5 inch square) wonton wrappers
For the Soup Base:
-
3 cups chicken stock
-
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions
Instructions
Prepare the wonton filling: In a large bowl, combine pork, shrimp, rice wine, soy sauce, brown sugar, green onions, and ginger. Stir well until the mixture is thoroughly combined. Let it rest for 25 to 30 minutes.
Assemble the wontons: Place approximately 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water and fold the wrapper over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges firmly to seal. Then, bring the left and right corners together above the filling, overlap them slightly, wet the tips, and press to seal. Continue until all wontons are filled and sealed.
Cook the soup: Bring the chicken stock to a rolling boil in a large pot. Gently drop the wontons into the boiling broth and cook for 5 minutes.
Serve the soup in bowls, garnished with freshly chopped green onions.
For Frying Wontons:
Heat 2 to 3 cups of oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Fry the wontons in batches, cooking for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until they turn golden brown. Remove from the oil and drain on a plate lined with paper towels. Serve with duck sauce (plum sauce) or your favorite dipping sauce.
Cooking Tip
If you have leftover uncooked wontons, store them in the freezer for up to 2 months, ensuring they're wrapped tightly. For frying, thaw them before cooking. If boiling, you can drop frozen wontons directly into the boiling broth and cook for 7 minutes.
