As we’ve traveled, we’ve discovered what each family member appreciates in a vacation, enabling us to craft more enjoyable experiences. So, whether you seek a peaceful retreat, an adrenaline-packed adventure, a culturally immersive journey, or an educational getaway, here are my top picks based on trips my family has cherished.
15 top summer family vacation suggestions
This compilation features a blend of family-friendly destinations across the US along with several international must-see spots that are conveniently accessible from major airports.
1. Martha’s Vineyard, MA
When I first traveled to Martha’s Vineyard with my family, I was apprehensive that my kids would quickly run out of activities. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. By the end of our summer getaway, they were reluctant to leave. This delightful island, located about an hour from Boston, boasts a laid-back, leisurely lifestyle, complete with numerous beaches, charming towns, and a variety of restaurants. My family reeled in dozens of fish during a half-day guided fishing excursion, savored delicious New England lobster rolls, admired the scenery from the iconic “Jaws bridge,” and wandered through the historic streets of Edgartown. If you’re considering a trip away from a bustling city, Martha’s Vineyard is an obvious choice.
2. New York, NY
The Big Apple is among the top family vacation destinations, offering something for everyone. Enjoy world-class performances at a Broadway show or take in the stunning New York City skyline from an observation deck (my personal favorite is SUMMIT One). You can organize a family picnic in Central Park or immerse yourself in culture at a renowned museum or art gallery. There's also a fantastic zoo and aquarium that my kids adore, along with the iconic Statue of Liberty. During our visit, each family member chose an activity, ensuring that by the end of our trip, everyone left feeling happy and fulfilled. Although the list of things to do might seem a bit overwhelming, a trip to NYC is always worth it.
3. Santa Rosa Beach, FL
Santa Rosa Beach, located on Florida's Gulf Coast, boasts a stunning stretch of picturesque beaches and charming towns along Highway 30A. Unlike the bustling atmosphere of Miami, this area offers a more relaxed vibe, allowing you to rent bikes and golf carts to explore the various towns. Seaside is a must-see for its grassy central area and food trucks housed in Airstream trailers, while Rosemary Beach draws inspiration from European villages for its delightful aesthetic. No need to worry about which towns to choose along the 30A, as all of them provide access to the sparkling aqua waters of the Gulf, one of the area's main attractions.
4. Las Vegas, NV
Primarily known for its adult-oriented attractions, Las Vegas has been expanding its family-friendly options in recent years, making it a fantastic choice for multi-generational family getaways. Many hotels in Vegas now offer activities for kids, such as the Big Apple Coaster at New York New York and the Tournament of Kings at Excalibur. There are also numerous live shows to enjoy, but if you're seeking something unique, don't miss Omega Mart, an immersive experience created by the imaginative team at Meow Wolf. Conclude each day with a leisurely stroll along Las Vegas Boulevard as the vibrant neon lights of the Strip illuminate the desert night sky.
5. Washington, D.C.
During the summer months, Washington, D.C. showcases a perfect mix of historic outdoor monuments and a seemingly endless array of museums that engage children's interests. My kids particularly enjoyed the International Spy Museum, which featured immersive experiences and allowed them to take on undercover roles in an interactive spy mission. After a day of exploring, you can relax at various restaurants along The Wharf—we especially loved the burgers at Lucky Buns. If you're fortunate, you might even catch a glimpse of the President returning to the White House on the Marine One helicopter from there.
6. Asheville, NC
If you're tired of spending every summer at the beach, consider exploring some beautiful hills instead. Asheville is a fantastic city to discover and serves as an ideal starting point for the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway leading to the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The downtown area is very walkable and features several microbreweries, many of which offer family-friendly activities like lawn games and play structures. You can also visit the historic Biltmore Estate and wander through its lush gardens. Families with younger children will enjoy the WNC Nature Center, which is home to over 60 native species.
7. San Diego, CA
Having grown up in San Diego, I always look forward to returning in the summer for its fantastic weather and the plethora of family-friendly activities. Theme parks like SeaWorld, Belmont Park, LEGOLAND, and Sesame Place are perfect for thrill-seekers of all ages. If you're interested in blending education with fun, visit Balboa Park, where you can choose from 18 different museums (my personal favorite is the Fleet Science Center). And if your adventures leave you craving a bite, make sure to try what I consider the best tacos in the world at Tacos El Gordo.
8. San Antonio, TX
San Antonio is an excellent destination for families seeking an affordable vacation, and despite its size, it exudes a charming small-town vibe. Whether you're wandering along the iconic River Walk or exploring Market Square, the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico, you'll find countless sightseeing opportunities. The city also boasts one of our children's favorite museums, the DoSeum, which is packed with interactive exhibits designed to spark creativity and offer educational experiences that keep their minds engaged.
9. Chicago, IL
I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of family-friendly experiences available in Chicago. A must-visit is Navy Pier, home to the Chicago Children's Museum and thrilling rides like the Wave Swinger and the Centennial Wheel. My family particularly enjoyed a riverboat architecture tour, where we explored Chicago’s rich architectural heritage and its influence on urban planning over the centuries. Additionally, Millennium Park offers countless family activities, from admiring the Cloud Gate (affectionately known as “the bean”) to enjoying live music at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.
10. Colorado Springs, CO
With the 2024 Olympics on the horizon, there’s no better time to explore Olympic City, USA. Colorado Springs deserves a top spot on your budget-friendly family vacation list. Kick off your adventure at the US Olympic Museum, where everyone can be inspired by Team USA's incredible sporting achievements. For those eager to discover new experiences, the Cave of the Winds offers hourly tours through its vast caverns, along with exhilarating rides like the Terror-dactyl, which plunges and swings you off a gorge into the canyon below.
11. Honolulu, HI
There’s an enchanting quality to Hawaii that’s difficult to articulate, but it’s palpable once you arrive. The island of Oahu is a wonderful choice for a delightful family getaway. One of my children's favorite memories from our last visit was at the Dole Pineapple Plantation, where they navigated a pineapple garden maze and discovered how pineapples are grown while enjoying the Pineapple Express train tour. When you’re not playing on Waikiki Beach, indulge in authentic Hawaiian cuisine at Germaine’s Luau, or explore the Pacific islands at the Children’s Discovery Center.
12. Reykjavik, Iceland
For outdoor enthusiasts, Iceland is a dream come true, filled with stunning glaciers, majestic waterfalls, soothing hot springs, and picturesque landscapes across the nation. It's undoubtedly one of my top recommendations for family vacations within a six-hour flight from many major US airports. During the summer, expect around 20 hours of sunlight and mild to cool temperatures, making it the ideal season to visit. However, due to the length of some hikes and age limitations on certain activities (such as glacier hiking), an Iceland vacation is best suited for families with older kids or teenagers.
13. Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Mexico is an excellent choice for enjoyable family vacations, and Playa del Carmen (near Cancun) is especially notable for its vibrant Mayan culture, mouthwatering cuisine, and thrilling outdoor adventure parks like Xcaret. Within a week, you can encounter diverse marine life at some of North America’s top snorkeling spots, zip line high above the treetops, and explore one of the Seven Wonders of the World—the Mayan city of Chichen Itza. If you prefer a more laid-back getaway, consider an all-inclusive resort like the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo, where you can relax on the beach while the kids enjoy their fantastic kids’ club.
14. Paris, France
If your family is set on traveling to Europe this summer, Paris is an excellent choice. In addition to iconic landmarks like the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and Arc de Triomphe, you'll discover unexpected adventures while exploring the historic streets or enjoying people-watching from a sidewalk café. The Palace of Versailles offers a chance to create unforgettable memories as you marvel at countless artworks and the stunning gardens. And if you’re craving a taste of home, Disneyland Paris guarantees hours of fun with exhilarating rides alongside Mickey and his friends.
15. La Fortuna, Costa Rica
When it comes to tropical destinations, Costa Rica is hard to surpass. La Fortuna, in particular, is famous for its close proximity to the Arenal volcano, providing a stunning backdrop for nearby adventures. If you’re planning a trip, I highly recommend staying at one of my favorite hotels, The Springs Resort. This resort features the Club Rio Adventure Center, where the whole family can enjoy activities like zip-lining, tubing, and horseback riding. After a day of excitement, unwind in one of the resort's many hot springs, each offering varying temperatures. La Fortuna truly is a fantastic place to create cherished memories for the entire family.
