A traveling acrobat shares four tips for enjoying Paris to the fullest.
Discover how to maximize your enjoyment after dark in Paris—or anywhere else.
Paris marked the final destination of an unforgettable European adventure for Lee Tripler. Throughout several weeks, she embraced the fun by performing at a karaoke bar in Amsterdam, savoring food from local trucks in Krakow, and taking a scenic river cruise in Budapest, among other thrilling experiences. Now, she was eager to visit the Eiffel Tower—but what began as a spontaneous picnic turned into an unexpected acrobatics lesson with numerous strangers.
Lee, a skilled acrobat with expertise in trapeze, hula hoop, and aerial arts, began showcasing some of her tricks on the lawn of the Eiffel Tower after sunset. Onlookers gathered to watch and gradually began to participate. While Lee was taken aback, she felt at ease; she had performed in front of audiences before. More and more people joined the festivities, transforming her Parisian picnic into an enchanting after-dark acrobatics celebration.
Motivated by the highlight of her trip and a night she will always cherish, Lee shares four suggestions on how to spark joy in Paris—or any other place.
Cities reveal a completely different charm after dark.- Explore the city after sunset
It might seem obvious, but places you visit during the day can look entirely different at night. Take the Eiffel Tower, for instance. It hosts a stunning light show that begins gently and builds into a dazzling display of blinking lights. This spectacle lasts until 2 A.M.! A large public space with a beautiful view and a lively crowd creates the perfect atmosphere for an exciting night out in a new city.
Picnicking in parks is a simple and enjoyable way to experience life like a local.- The most enjoyable activities often come at little to no cost
While Paris boasts many famous (and expensive) restaurants, sometimes a picnic in the park is all you really need—just some cheese, bread, wine, and chocolate laid out on the grass. You don’t always have to splurge on a gourmet meal. Grab a baguette and explore! This method works well in many travel spots if you can find public spaces where people gather at the end of the day—like beaches, parks, or downtown plazas.
- Embrace the opportunity to try something entirely new
You’re on an adventure! Stay flexible, or you might miss out on some of your most memorable experiences. Don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone, like the park visitors near the Eiffel Tower who joined in the acrobatics—many of whom were travelers themselves, embracing the spirit of saying, “yes.” When you’re out at night in an unfamiliar city far from home, it’s often about being present and open to whatever comes your way.
- Showcase your talents
Everyone possesses a unique skill, and sharing your party tricks can help you connect with new people. Whether it’s your singing abilities, dance moves, dad jokes, or card tricks, displaying your quirky talents can lead to unexpected interactions while you travel. Let’s be honest, everyone wants to have a little more fun while on vacation.
