It's been just over four months since the Kilauea volcano erupted, causing massive lava flows that engulfed more than 700 homes.
Officials at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park now confirm that it's safe for tourists to return, though extra care is still necessary when visiting.
Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and when it erupted in May, authorities gave residents and visitors a stark choice: evacuate or face arrest.
For months, neighborhoods were buried under volcanic ash while earthquakes and eruptions continued to shake the area.
The park closed on May 11 due to significant damage, including ruined buildings and trails, broken water and sewer lines, and over 60 explosions at its summit.
What you can expect from the changes
Superintendent Cindy Orlando revealed plans to reopen the park by Saturday, September 22 – coinciding with National Public Lands Day – but cautioned visitors about limited access, services, and operating hours, along with the possibility of long wait times. Entrance will be free on that day.
With volcanic ash still lingering in several areas, park officials advise visitors to bring protective eyewear and masks if they plan on hiking specific trails.
Ongoing concerns include unpredictable weather and the potential for further volcanic eruptions.
A special reopening advisory warns visitors about potential hazards, including unpredictable rockfalls and sinkholes.
The advisory explains, 'Kilauea's dramatic landscape is continually shaped by powerful and uncontrollable natural forces. Respect the dangers of this ever-changing environment and avoid restricted areas.'
