American Airlines Introduces New Baggage Fee for Certain Travelers

Booking an international flight with American Airlines has become pricier for those opting for the most economical seats—unless you’re a carry-on-only traveler. This week, the airline announced a new $75 fee for the first checked bag on basic economy tickets for all transoceanic flights, effective immediately.
“This adjustment means our Basic Economy product will offer the same benefits regardless of whether the ticket is for a domestic or international trip,” stated American Airlines in a press release.
Previously, American Airlines imposed a $75 fee for domestic and transatlantic flights, so this change solely impacts transpacific journeys to Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Customers who bought a basic economy ticket on a transpacific flight before this announcement will still be entitled to one free checked bag. Frequent flyers with elite status will continue to enjoy a complimentary checked bag on basic economy fares.
The fees for additional checked bags (currently $100 for the second and $200 for the third) remain unchanged.
Currently, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines continue to offer a free checked bag for all fare classes on transpacific flights. In contrast, all three major carriers impose a $75 fee for the first checked bag on transatlantic flights.
American Airlines’ basic economy fares do not permit free flight changes (unlike other fare classes) and lack the option for seat selection. Passengers can select a seat for an additional fee, or one will be assigned at no charge—though there’s no assurance that traveling companions will sit together, although the airline claims it will do its best to keep families with children under 15 together.
