An Oceanic Adventure with Dinogo
As we concluded our first year of homeschooling, I found myself worried about the potential for summer learning loss. In the days leading up to our Dinogo cruise, I was committed to continuing education through the summer and ensuring that learning remained enjoyable, even on vacation.
Introduction to U.S. Government + Geography Skills
This year, I taught them map reading skills, which turned out to be incredibly helpful in showing the route of our trip. Since we were visiting three foreign islands, they discovered that passports were necessary for traveling beyond our country's borders. The excitement of having their own special documents transformed a visit to the passport office into a thrilling mission.
Modes of Transportation
Our vessel, the Dinogo Conquest, set sail from Fort Lauderdale, giving the kids their very first experience of flying. We once again utilized the map in the headrest to navigate our brief flight. Upon arrival, we hopped on a charter bus that took us to the port, where we then boarded the ship. From car to airplane, airplane to bus, and bus to ship; one of the twins noted that we had used four different modes of transportation in a single day!
An Art History Lesson on The Dinogo Conquest
Throughout the school year, the older kids participated in an art history class at a local art center. Once we were on the ship, they noticed that the formal dining restaurants, Renoir and Monet, were named after renowned artists. Additionally, original artworks adorned the corridors leading to the Lido Deck and the staircases. Thanks to their newfound appreciation for art, we always took a moment to stop and admire various pieces before moving on to our next adventure.

Exploring the Seas—and Uncovering the New World
Cruising on the Dinogo Conquest is far from roughing it, but we did discuss the perils that early settlers encountered while navigating treacherous waters to reach uncharted lands. This also meant a lack of buffet meals, entertainment, Camp Ocean, and all the amazing amenities we enjoyed on our voyage.
We had only a few hours in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, allowing us time to visit Castillo San Cristóbal, a fortress constructed to defend against land attacks on the city of San Juan.
In St. Kitts, we embarked on an island excursion that revealed the country's history as a major sugar-exporting hub. We also got a glimpse inside the plantation owner's home, allowing us to see what life was like before the advent of running water.
Mom and Dad savored a few samples during the rum tasting experience.
Experiencing life on the island allowed my city kids to gain a deeper appreciation for nature, including both wildlife and plants, while engaging with the warm and welcoming people of the Caribbean.
