An Overview of Holland America's 11 Cruise Ships
When you embark on a journey with Holland America Line (HAL), a World’s Best Awards Hall of Fame inductee, you can anticipate exceptional dining, thrilling destinations (over 300 ports across all seven continents), and luxurious service. This Dinogo reader-favorite cruise line delivers a premium cruise experience without the hefty price tag.
Based on my personal experience with Holland America, I can attest to their exemplary service. During my time on the Eurodam, the main dining room staff consistently greeted my sister and me by name. Being treated like a friend rather than just another passenger is a true luxury, especially on such a large vessel (which can accommodate between 1,432 and 2,668 guests). HAL “takes pride in its elegantly designed ships and warm service, ensuring all guests enjoy touches of luxury throughout their journey,” says Holland America Line expert and Marvelous Mouse Travels travel advisor Charlene Recio.
Other highlights include the cruise line's collaboration with the Professional Pickleball Association — equipping every ship with courts and complimentary lessons — as well as sophisticated dining options like the innovative Global Fresh Fish Program, which features over 80 varieties of fresh, locally sourced seafood specialties based on your location. Imagine enjoying yellowtail snapper in the Caribbean, sardines in the Mediterranean, and halibut in Alaska.
While all 11 ships share some similarities, it’s crucial to recognize their unique features when selecting the ideal cruise for you. “The Pinnacle Class vessels offer more dining choices and entertainment, whereas the smaller ships in the R or Vista classes provide easier access to more exclusive destinations,” Recio elaborates. Here, discover the details of each Holland America ship, including key amenities and capacities, making your next booking a straightforward process.

For live music lovers, the "Music Walk" offers various experiences, from pop tunes at Billboard Onboard to soulful performances at B.B. King's Blues Club.
Nieuw Statendam

Ship Class: Pinnacle
Capacity: 2,666 passengers
Nieuw Statendam provides a classic cruising experience, complete with formal nights and afternoon tea, infused with a modern touch. Music plays a central role aboard, as the ship's distinctive design is inspired by musical instruments, accompanied by an impressive collection of music-themed art. Other notable features include an enhanced Music Walk area, a two-tiered World Stage theater, and exceptional specialty dining options such as Tamarind for Southeast Asian cuisine and Rudi’s Sel De Mer for elegant French-inspired dishes.
Koningsdam

Ship Class: Pinnacle
Capacity: 2,650 passengers
With its sleek lines, contemporary decor, and bright, naturally lit areas, Koningsdam offers a more open and airy feel compared to other Holland America ships. As the first vessel in the Pinnacle Class, it features live music venues, outdoor movie nights by the pool, pickleball courts, and a vibrant casino. For relaxation, guests can visit the spa or enjoy the tranquility of the adults-only Retreat area.
Nieuw Amsterdam

Ship Class: Signature
Capacity: 2,106 passengers
True to its name, this elegant ship pays tribute to New York City. Design features reinforce the theme, including a crystal chandelier shaped like the skyline, numerous photos and artworks showcasing motifs from "The City That Never Sleeps," and even a full-sized yellow taxi in the kids club.
Take a leisurely walk along the wraparound promenade, enjoy live music at Billboard Onboard, and rent a luxurious cabana in the exclusive adults-only Retreat. Don't miss out on the ship's exceptional dining options — it's the only Holland America Line ship with a permanent Morimoto by Sea restaurant. Chef Masaharu Morimoto, renowned from Iron Chef and the line's Fresh Fish Ambassador, has created pop-up experiences on various HAL ships, but his masterpiece is the standalone Morimoto venue unique to Nieuw Amsterdam.
Eurodam

Ship Class: Signature
Capacity: 2,104 passengers
As the inaugural ship of Holland America’s Signature Class, Eurodam radiates sophistication without the formality. During my cruise to Alaska in August 2022, I was particularly impressed by the vibrant live music at Music Walk.
I also enjoyed relaxing on a thermal lounger at the spa, indulged in crispy fish and chips (using Alaskan halibut, naturally), lounged by the Lido Pool—where the retractable roof is perfect for rainy days—sipped iced lattes and hot cocoa, and watched for whales from the Explorer’s Lounge.
Noordam

Ship Class: Vista
Capacity: 1,924 passengers
Noordam features an art collection worthy of a gallery and stylish staterooms. There are plenty of public areas and activities available, but don't expect extravagant entertainment. Instead, you can engage in pickleball, sing along to live music in one of the Music Walk venues, curl up with a good book in the library, unwind at the spa, or enjoy a swim in one of the pools.
Westerdam

Ship Class: Vista
Capacity: 1,916 passengers
Westerdam marked its 20th anniversary this year, yet it maintains a modern vibe similar to other vessels, thanks to new music venues like Billboard Onboard and Rolling Stone Lounge. It also offers activities such as wine tastings and bingo. Fitness enthusiasts can visit the sports court for a complimentary pickleball lesson to hone their skills.
Oosterdam

Ship Class: Vista
Capacity: 1,964 passengers
Oosterdam — the second ship in the Vista Class series — is one of the most family-oriented vessels in the fleet. While all HAL ships feature complimentary kids clubs for children aged three to 17, only a select few (including Oosterdam) offer High Score!, a game room where kids and adults can enjoy games like skeeball.
While the kids have fun, adults can relax with a massage at the spa or sip cocktails in a chic bar or lounge like Ocean Bar. Come together for dinner before heading out to enjoy live music at Billboard Onboard or Rolling Stone Lounge for a date night, or try your luck at the casino.
Zuiderdam

Ship Class: Vista
Capacity: 1,964 passengers
At 22 years old, Zuiderdam remains a beloved choice among Holland America fans for its timeless nautical design, modern amenities, and a variety of dining experiences, including the upscale Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and Dive In, a casual poolside spot serving Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and fries.
The public areas are equally remarkable, featuring the luxurious cabana-lined Retreat (exclusively for adults) and the lively Rolling Stone Lounge. This ship will also serve as the 2025 home for Holland America’s annual Grand World Voyage, an extraordinary world cruise that spans six continents over an astonishing 124 days.
Zaandam

Ship Class: R Class
Capacity: 1,432 passengers
Together with its nearly identical sister ship, the Volendam, Zaandam represents the smaller end of HAL's fleet. This vessel is designed to accommodate a line-minimum of 1,432 passengers while providing ample space to explore, making it perfect for a more personal and intimate cruising experience. The ship features musical-themed decor, including signed guitars from Queen, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton.
Volendam

Ship Class: R Class
Capacity: 1,432 passengers
Volendam is the oldest ship in the line, celebrating 25 years of service. Despite its vintage, this cozy vessel enchants with its beautifully designed public spaces, showcasing garden-inspired elements like fresh flowers, floral patterns, and elegant tapestries. As one of only two Holland America ships without a Music Walk, Volendam offers a more serene and relaxed onboard ambiance.
