Are you brave enough to spend Halloween in the haunted Paris Catacombs?

At last, a place in Paris more terrifying than that rundown two-star hotel you stayed at during your backpacking adventure.
For just one night, Airbnb is offering two adventurous souls the chance to win a Halloween stay in the Paris Catacombs – the ‘world’s largest cemetery.’
They’ll have the exclusive distinction of being the first living people to ever do so.
Sitting 20 meters below ground, the Catacombs form a vast, 300-kilometer network of tunnels lined with skulls – though only a small portion is open to the public.
Six million souls reside here.
The walls are adorned with the carefully stacked skulls and bones of the deceased, their remains relocated during the 18th and 19th centuries when Paris' city cemeteries were closed for public health reasons.
The Airbnb contest offers the opportunity to spend a night among six million of Paris’s most revered residents.
At least, they'll remain silent.

Up until now, Airbnb's latest Paris listing has only hosted guests who didn’t mind the lack of comfort, but the eerie accommodations will now feature a bed, a vanity, and a dining area.
The lucky winners will enjoy a private tour, a mysterious 'daunting culinary experience,' and a storyteller to lull them to sleep (or into sleepless terror) with spine-chilling bedtime stories.
House rules caution visitors not to 'follow ghosts' through the tunnels, as 'you might never find your way out.'
Wise words.
In 1793, Philibert Aspairt wandered too deep into the Catacombs and became lost. His body wasn’t discovered until 11 years later.
Victims of the guillotine's blade
Notable residents include Princess Elisabeth of France, who met her fate at the guillotine, and Maximilien Robespierre, the architect of the French Revolution and its Reign of Terror, who eventually lost his own head after orchestrating the deaths of others.
The bones are organized based on the cemeteries from which they were relocated.
Some are carefully stacked, while others are arranged into intricate patterns and images.
The Empire of Death

Mining engineer Louis-Etienne Hericart de Thury oversaw the renovations that transformed these bone-filled caverns into a public mausoleum.
The idea for the archway inscriptions also came from him.
“Arrete, c’est ici l’empire de la mort!” (“Stop! Welcome to the empire of death!”) is one of the most iconic.

Safety measures have been implemented to protect participants and preserve the ossuary.
Anyone eager for a sleepover 20 meters beneath the Parisian streets – deep enough that screams won’t reach the surface – should check the Catacombs’ Airbnb listing before October 20 at 11:59 p.m. (CET).
