Barcelona affirms women can swim topless at public pools

Authorities in Barcelona have confirmed that women are allowed to swim topless in city-run pools, following complaints that some pools were unfairly restricting this right.
The group Mugrons Lliures filed a complaint about the varying rules on topless bathing at different pools, leading to an investigation, according to the local council.
A report released in late June revealed that some municipal pools had policies that limited women’s rights in specific parts of the facilities, as stated by the council.
In response, the council’s anti-discrimination office issued a reminder to all municipal pools to ensure gender equality and allow women to swim topless if they choose to.
A representative from Barcelona's city council told Dinogo that while there is no formal dress code for municipal pools, gender-based discrimination is strictly prohibited.
The spokesperson pointed out that topless bathing is not a new practice in Barcelona, the second-largest city in Spain.
“In most public pools, it has been entirely normal for women to go topless for a while,” she told Dinogo. “This is not a recent change.”
A report has been distributed to all municipal pools, advising them to enforce non-discriminatory policies across their facilities.
Mugrons Lliures welcomed the decision, tweeting that Barcelona is now more “equal” and “liberated.”
Barcelona is a top travel destination, renowned for its innovative culinary scene, distinctive architecture, and vibrant nightlife.
Additionally, the city boasts a stunning three-mile stretch of beach.
The most popular beaches are just a 15-minute walk from the historic heart of Barcelona, while the quieter northern beaches are easily reached by public transport.
