Yet, one challenge of visiting Greece is the cost, particularly if you aim for the popular islands during the busy summer months from June to September. But fear not — there are still plenty of budget-friendly strategies to experience Greece without overspending. Here’s how to plan your adventure affordably.

Explore Alternative Destinations 

Greece boasts amazing locations, including renowned islands like Santorini and Mykonos. However, as many locals suggest, visitors can save some cash by venturing to lesser-known islands. 

"Traveling to the Greek islands on a budget doesn't mean you have to give up beauty or charm," said Lena Korres, co-founder of the Greek skincare brand Korres, in an interview with Dinogo. "While Santorini and Mykonos are well-known, these islands attract hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. Fortunately, there are many hidden gems with sandy shores, azure bays, rugged cliffs, and picturesque white and blue homes that provide affordability without skimping on breathtaking views, vibrant culture, and mouthwatering food." 

Here are some alternative destinations that can help you find great deals and enjoy a more tranquil experience. 

Choose Syros Over Santorini

While Santorini is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets and caldera vistas, Syros offers a similar allure with equally stunning beaches. "In Syros, the Cyclades' capital, tourism isn't the main source of income yet. It’s a fascinating island to explore, offering a more budget-friendly option compared to nearby Mykonos or Santorini," shared Athens local and blogger Nicoletta Barbata of One Quarter Greek.

Opt for Thessaloniki Instead of Athens

Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, boasts a wealth of historical and cultural attractions that can rival those in Athens. Visitors can delve into Byzantine churches, ancient ruins, and lively markets, all while enjoying the city’s renowned culinary scene. It’s even recognized as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. 

Choose Naxos Over Paros

Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades Islands, often gets overlooked in favor of its more popular neighbor, Paros, known for its vibrant nightlife and picturesque cobblestone streets. However, Naxos has plenty of charm with fewer tourists and lower prices. From ancient ruins to beautiful beaches, Naxos truly has it all.

"For budget travelers, the shoulder seasons—late April to early June and September to early October—are perfect," explained Eduardo Vega Augusto, editor at the travel deals platform TravelPirates. "These periods offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable accommodation rates." Augusto also suggests two strategies for finding budget-friendly flights to Greece: opt for budget airlines and book your tickets as early as possible.

"Many budget airlines, including Play Airlines, provide economical flights from major U.S. cities to Europe, making Greece a more reachable destination," said Augusto. "Norse Air also offers a direct summer route from New York to Athens at a significantly reduced price." Flexibility can greatly enhance your savings. "Adjusting your travel dates can result in substantial discounts. Use Google Flights alerts to track price changes from nearby airports," Augusto advised. "Booking accommodations well in advance, especially prior to the peak season, can also help you secure lower rates." 

Tips for Finding Budget Accommodations

Even the top hotels in Greece present excellent deals during the off-peak season. 

“In Athens, you have the flexibility to spend as much or as little as you wish, making it a great-value European capital," stated Andria Mitsakos, president of AMPR and owner of Anthologist in Athens. "Luxury accommodations like our iconic Hotel Grande Bretagne (celebrating its 150th anniversary this year) and the stylish boutique Dolli hotel offer reduced rates during the off-season. Both are ideal for a weekend getaway." Here are some more budget-friendly hotel options to consider.

The Zillers Boutique Hotel, Athens

Situated in the center of Athens, The Zillers Boutique Hotel provides a lavish experience at a reasonable price. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant, which features locally sourced Greek dishes that will leave you craving more.

Porto Naxos Hotel, Naxos

Enjoying a budget-friendly Greek island getaway is entirely feasible if you choose accommodations like Porto Naxos. This hotel strikes a perfect balance between luxury and affordability, offering fantastic deals for those who plan ahead. Artemis, Milos

While The Artemis might still feel like a bit of a splurge, it’s actually a bargain compared to other hotels on the island of Milos. Treating yourself to a few nights here could be worthwhile, as the hotel is situated right on the beach and features one of the island's trendiest beach bars.

Budget-Friendly Transportation Options 

Travelers eager to hop between the Greek islands by ferry should look into the Eurail Greek Islands Pass, which enables exploration for four days within a month starting at $84 or six days within a month for $192. 

"Consider visiting a lesser-known port, such as Lavrio in the Attica region," suggested Melanie Marten, an Athens local and PR consultant at The Coup. This port leads to a hidden gem of an island, as she explained. "The ferry from Lavrio takes you to the stunning island of Kea. Unlike the crowded port of Piraeus, Lavrio offers a peaceful escape, making Kea a fantastic destination from April to October." 

Free and Budget-Friendly Activities

One of the best aspects of visiting Greece is the abundance of historical sites to explore—many of which are more affordable than you might think. Here are a few tips for saving on visits to some of its iconic attractions. 

Explore the Acropolis in Athens.

A trip to Greece wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Acropolis. The entrance fee is approximately $16 during peak season, but there are discounts in winter, and the site has several free admission days each year.

Discover the National Archaeological Museum.

Experience some of the world's most significant ancient artifacts at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. The standard entrance fee is quite affordable, and the museum also provides free admission on the first Sunday of each month from November to March. 

Enjoy a hike.
