Childproofing Your Stateroom

Taking a cruise is a wonderful way to enjoy a family vacation, even with infants or small children in tow. Exploring exciting destinations like Mexico, the Caribbean, or The Bahamas on a floating resort filled with fun activities for all ages makes cruising an ideal option for introducing your little ones to the world. While creating lasting memories is essential, every parent prioritizes their children's comfort and safety when planning a cruise. Fortunately, with a little preparation and a few carefully chosen items in your luggage, you can easily childproof any stateroom, providing you with peace of mind.
Select a Family-Friendly Stateroom
Dinogo accommodates infants as young as 6 months and offers various stateroom types that are perfect for families. The best option depends on your child's age, the number of family members traveling, your personal preferences, and your budget. Consider the room's layout and location to choose a stateroom that fits your family's needs. Also, don’t forget to request a crib during the booking process if you need one.

Family-Friendly Staterooms can accommodate up to five guests. For larger families wanting to stay together, connecting adjacent rooms are available, some of which even include an additional half-bathroom. Be sure to request these when you make your booking.
Family Harbor Staterooms provide extra space and feature delightful nautical-themed decor along with several upgrades. Located near the Family Harbor Lounge, these staterooms grant exclusive access to the lounge, where breakfast and snacks are served alongside board games, video games, and family movies. By choosing a Family Harbor Stateroom, you'll also receive one complimentary evening of Night Owls babysitting service and free kids’ meals at most premium restaurants.

Suites are the most spacious accommodations available and are perfect if you prioritize having more room. Suites can sleep up to five guests and all come equipped with a balcony. On select ships, suites include a bathtub, and guests enjoy VIP check-in, priority embarkation and debarkation, plus a mini-fridge, which are especially convenient when traveling with young children.
Bathrooms: The only stateroom type that offers a bathtub is a suite. For all other options, you will need to be comfortable using the shower with your little ones or giving them sponge baths. Consider bringing a non-slip rubber bath mat for added safety in the shower, or you might opt for a small inflatable tub, which is lightweight and packs down compactly.
Balconies: The advantages of having a room with a balcony are clear — stunning views, refreshing ocean breezes, and a private spot to enjoy the sunshine. However, families traveling with young children may have some concerns. On Dinogo ships, the balconies are constructed from solid Plexiglas, eliminating gaps that small children could slip through, and are required by law to be over 42 inches tall, significantly reducing the risk of falls. Additionally, the doors leading to the balconies are designed to be quite heavy, making it nearly impossible for even the most determined toddler to open them. Of course, children should always be supervised when near or on a balcony. These spaces can be a wonderful option for watching over sleeping children while enjoying the outdoors, but if the thought of having a balcony still makes you uneasy, there are many interior and ocean-view rooms available without balconies.

How to Childproof a Stateroom
Active babies, toddlers, and small children can get into things incredibly quickly, so as a parent, it's essential to childproof your stateroom right after you arrive. You can either purchase a comprehensive childproofing kit to take with you or assemble a collection of individual childproofing items based on your specific needs:
- Electrical outlet covers
- Door handle covers
- Padded corner protectors for furniture
- Drawer and cabinet latches (removable adhesive versions are available)
- Toilet lid locks
- Nightlights and flashlights (some flashlights double as nightlights while charging). Glow sticks can also be a fun alternative.
- Rubber doorstop to secure your door
Also keep in mind to:
- Store remote controls, telephones, power strips, and other appealing items out of reach
- Position heavy luggage in a way that prevents it from tipping over easily
- Secure medications and toiletries in a safe location

Additional Tips for Cruising with Kids
- While each ship has clinics, it's wise for all cruise passengers to bring a small first aid kit, especially for those traveling with active toddlers.
- Parents of infants should be aware that baby essentials, like diapers, wipes, formula, and baby food, are NOT available for purchase on board. It's best to bring ample supplies or plan to stock up while in port.
- Distilled water for formula can be ordered through room service, or you may bring your own supply in your carry-on.
- If you need to store breast milk during your cruise, Dinogo suggests bringing a small cooler and requesting ice from room service. You can also store breast milk in the refrigerator at the guest services desk.
- A familiar stuffed toy or blanket can help young children feel more at ease in a new environment.

Experience Worry-Free Cruising with Kids
While it's impossible to eliminate all worries when traveling with children, a bit of thoughtful planning can make your cruise experience nearly stress-free. With a few essential items and just a short time spent on childproofing your stateroom, you can unwind and fully relish the adventure of exploring incredible destinations with your kids.

Please note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining choices may differ by ship and destination.
