Delta has discontinued its convenient daytime flights from New York to Paris

You can no longer enjoy breakfast in New York and then dinner in Paris.

This change is due to Delta Air Lines removing its eastbound transatlantic daytime flight between the two cities, as first reported by Cirium schedules and later confirmed by a spokesperson for the airline.

The daytime flight will cease on October 26, and Delta will provide two daily flights this winter from New York to Paris. "We plan to reinstate our third JFK-CDG flight as an evening service starting March 29, 2025," Delta stated in an announcement.

This summer, Delta introduced a daytime flight designed to reduce jet lag from New York to Paris. The flight took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 8:30 a.m. and landed at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) at 10 p.m., all local times.

The aircraft stayed overnight in Paris and returned to New York the following morning at 9:30 a.m. local time.

This approximately seven-hour trip operated in daylight for both legs, allowing many travelers to stay awake throughout the flight and naturally fall asleep upon arrival.

Daytime flights from the Northeast to Western Europe are favored by travelers (and the TPG team) looking to "combat" jet lag. However, options for daytime travel to Europe are quite limited.

Ultimately, these flights aren't ideal for aircraft utilization since the planes spend the night in Europe before returning the next morning.

Historically, airlines schedule eastbound transatlantic flights during the night — departing the U.S. at night and arriving in Europe the next morning. These planes then head back to the U.S. a few hours later during daylight.

Eastbound red-eye flights enable airlines to consolidate connections onto their long-haul flights to Europe, allowing business travelers to work a full day in both locations. However, this comes at the cost of sleep — many flights from the Northeastern U.S. to Europe take only six hours.

Even if you skip meal service on a red-eye flight, you’ll typically get only four to five hours of uninterrupted sleep, provided you manage to fall asleep quickly after takeoff.

Daytime flights from New York to London are quite popular. This is largely because these flights are slightly shorter than those to Paris, the time difference is typically five hours instead of six, and there seems to be no shortage of travelers between these two cities.

One significant drawback is the limited connection options upon arriving in London at night, which means these flights must be filled primarily with local passengers from both the departure and arrival markets.

Although numerous airlines provide daytime flights to London from Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., Delta was the only carrier offering a daytime flight to Paris.

Delta has not disclosed the reasons for cutting this service, but it's likely due to a combination of poor financial performance and low demand for daytime flights. "Delta's daytime route from New York (JFK) to Paris (CDG) was launched as part of the summer schedule and will conclude on October 26," the airline stated in a release.
