Delta Introduces New Routes to Europe for 2023
While fall has officially arrived, Delta Air Lines is already planning for summer 2023. On September 23, the airline unveiled its intentions to expand transatlantic service with several new routes, including one new destination and another not seen in two decades.
With this expanded service, Delta will offer nearly 620 weekly flights and connect to about 32 destinations across Europe in 2023, providing 8 percent more seats to Europe from the U.S. compared to 2022.
This increased international capacity follows a difficult year for airlines, as they struggled to meet the rapid rise in travel demand with insufficient staff at both airlines and airports. To mitigate operational challenges, Delta committed to maintaining its flight capacity at June levels for the rest of 2022. However, as the airline looks toward 2023, it aims for renewed growth.
Here’s a summary of the new and returning routes to Europe that Delta plans to operate next year.
New Delta Routes from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
Delta’s main hub for European flights is set to receive the majority of new and enhanced routes. In 2023, the airline aims to provide over 220 weekly departures to 26 destinations across Europe from JFK.
New or resuming daily flights from JFK include:
- JFK to London Gatwick Airport (LGW) in the UK: Daily service starting April 10 (new)
- JFK to Geneva Airport (GVA) in Switzerland: Daily flights resuming April 10 (first time since 1993)
- JFK to Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER) in Germany: Daily service resuming May 25 (previously suspended in 2019)
Additionally, Delta will introduce a third daily flight from JFK to Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport starting May 25.
New Delta Routes from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
To ensure its hometown airport is well-served, Delta has also revealed plans to resume flights to three European cities from Atlanta:
- Atlanta to Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS) in Germany: Service will operate three times a week starting May 9 (this route is being reinstated for the first time since the pandemic began)
- Atlanta to Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland: Flights will run five times a week beginning May 25 (this route hasn't been operated since 2007)
- Atlanta to Stuttgart Airport (STR) in Germany: Three times a week service will resume on May 26 (marking the first flights since March 2020)
New Delta Flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Delta has not offered any transatlantic flights from LAX since the pandemic started, but that will change in March 2023. The new and returning daily routes include:
- LAX to London Heathrow (LHR): Daily flights starting March 25 (this route hasn't been operated since 2015)
- LAX to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG): Daily flights beginning May 8 (last operated in March 2020)
The expansion of transatlantic routes coincides with Delta's efforts to upgrade its Premium Select service on long-haul flights, aiming to attract travelers seeking added comfort for their journeys across the ocean next year.
