Discovering the Rich History of the Caribbean

From ancient Mayan temples to the home of reggae!

Textbooks provide excellent insights into a nation's history—covering everything from its significant landmarks to treasured artworks, and its founding year, among other details.
History isn't just found in textbooks; it's also woven into our experiences. Indeed! The flavors, sounds, and sights you encounter while traveling can offer invaluable lessons. The Caribbean is brimming with incredible experiences.
With this in mind, let’s explore some Caribbean history that reveals the diverse cultures and stories within the region.

Puerto Rico: The Historic Old San Juan
The name itself speaks volumes! Viejo San Juan (Old San Juan) is rich in historical charm, featuring over 400 beautifully restored structures dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
This area also boasts some of the oldest, largest, and best-preserved Spanish forts in the New World–including Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, the city walls, San Juan Gate, and Fort San Juan de la Cruz. Together, they form a National Park Service site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
With walls up to 18 feet thick and towers soaring as high as 145 feet, these forts feature elaborate networks of tunnels and dungeons, showcasing remarkable engineering that captivates anyone–not just history enthusiasts.

Jamaica:
Does history have to be confined to the ancient past? Absolutely not! Jamaica may have a relatively small population, but not too long ago, this island made a monumental impact on music history: Reggae.
Emerging in the 1960s, reggae blended various musical influences, including American jazz and traditional Jamaican folk, all infused with lively rhythms. It’s no wonder that the iconic sounds of Bob Marley have resonated around the globe; Toots and the Maytals are also regarded as “co-founders” of this genre, even helping to coin the term with their famous track “Do the Reggae.”

Mexico:
On the other hand, some histories stretch back millennia! Let’s turn back time over two thousand years to explore Tulum and the achievements and marvels of the ancient Mayan civilization. Among the remarkably preserved structures is the Temple of the Frescoes, an observatory adorned with vibrant murals depicting the Mayan “diving god.”
Further inland from the stunning beaches of the Yucatán Peninsula lie even more historical treasures. The Uxmal ruins are nearby, a city that was constructed not through geometry but through the principles of astronomy! Indeed, the star-gazing Mayans arranged Uxmal according to celestial alignments, such as the rising and setting of Venus.

Barbados:
When you envision the Caribbean, certain images spring to mind: sun-soaked beaches, sparkling turquoise waters, perhaps pirates, and of course, rum!
This is largely because the Caribbean was a key region for cultivating sugarcane, and rum is produced from distilled sugar cane juice. The oldest operational distillery is located in Barbados—Mount Gay, which has been in business since 1703.
This highlights that not all history is confined to the past; you can experience it in various delightful forms today!
