Essential items to pack for ultimate comfort on long flights
While long-haul flights may seem daunting, packing a few key essentials can dramatically enhance your experience. With a bit of foresight and some clever tips, you can bring everything needed to elevate your inflight comfort and arrive feeling more refreshed than you might expect, even from a middle seat.
Comfort essentials for extended flights
Though it might seem straightforward, ensuring your personal comfort is the most effective way to enhance your long-haul journey. Prioritize your comfort first, then utilize any extra carry-on space for additional necessities.
On your person
Opt for loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows for easy blood flow and doesn’t cause discomfort from bloating, a frequent issue when flying. The only snug items should be compression socks, which can enhance circulation in your legs and alleviate swelling.
Sudden noises can easily disrupt your sleep, so invest in high-quality noise-canceling headphones to reduce unwanted sounds. Consider creating a long playlist of classical music to help you drift off and stay asleep. Even if you usually struggle to sleep on planes, over-ear headphones are essential for long flights, as they can reduce stress and enhance relaxation (earbuds may become uncomfortable over time).
Enhance your sleep quality with an eye mask to block out ambient light (silk is ideal for your skin). A neck pillow is also beneficial for providing support for your head whether you're awake or asleep.
On your body
Airplane seats are famously cramped and seldom made with luxurious materials, so enhance your comfort by improving your surroundings. I always bring at least one extra travel pillow to cushion my elbow against the hard armrest, along with a lightweight blanket that can serve as extra padding if warmth isn't needed. These items also create a little more space between you and your neighbors and can provide lumbar support or be used as a seat cushion.
I pack extra pillows even when flying in premium cabins where they might already be available. You can never have too much cushioning, so having two of each is even better.
Essential entertainment items for long flights
Most airlines provide inflight entertainment for long-haul flights, featuring movies, TV shows, music, and games. Some even include a selection of podcasts and audiobooks. While the options can be extensive, you can also download your favorite entertainment in advance on your devices.
Don’t forget to pack chargers for any devices you plan to use, and having fully charged portable battery packs is crucial if your seat’s power outlet is broken or unavailable. Books can be a great way to fill long hours, but opt for lighter paperbacks or digital versions to ease your carry-on load.
Health and wellness essentials for long flights
Regardless of your reasons for flying, you’ll want to arrive in the best possible physical and mental shape. These long-flight essentials will help ensure you stay at your best.
Tips for minimizing jet lag on long-haul flights
Many jet lag reduction strategies start well before your flight, but there are still actions you can take onboard. Staying properly hydrated is essential for getting good sleep during the flight and minimizing discomfort upon arrival. Opt for water instead of alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, which can dehydrate you and disrupt sleep. Additionally, pack healthy snacks that are low in carbs, salt, and sugar to enhance comfort and promote better sleep.
Furthermore, start adjusting to your destination's local time as soon as you board and adhere to its sleeping schedule. When it’s time to sleep at your destination, aim to sleep on the flight, or at least limit stimulating activities if you can’t fall asleep. Light exercises in your seat and short walks will help alleviate discomfort and adjust your body to the local time.
Don't neglect your skincare routine
While you might not be able to maintain your full skincare routine during a flight, a few key essentials can make a big difference in the air.
Ideally, it's best to skip makeup on long-haul flights. If you do wear it, be sure to remove it before sleeping, just as you would at home. This is also the perfect time to apply facial moisturizer, which will hydrate your hands and any exposed skin affected by cabin air. Brushing your teeth can help prevent unpleasant tastes (and bad breath) upon waking, and don’t forget to apply moisturizing lip balm regularly.
Some of our favorite flight paths
If you're eager to travel but haven't decided on a destination yet, consider some of these popular long-haul routes from the United States. Flights to London are among the most frequent arrivals in Europe, but you can also explore flights to Paris or flights to Amsterdam for other sought-after European destinations.
Tips for packing and organizing for long flights
When considering how to pack your carry-on, remember that less is more. A compact suitcase can fit in the overhead compartment, but any items you need frequently should be in a flexible bag small enough to slide under the seat in front of you. Space is limited there, so avoid overpacking, as this is also your legroom.
Keep cords and small items neatly organized in specific containers instead of letting them get mixed up, and use sealed plastic bags for food and liquids to avoid spills on your belongings. Prepare a carry-on packing list ahead of time, and refrain from adding unnecessary items at the last minute.
Refer to this list when repacking to ensure your return trip is just as enjoyable. Check out these additional travel packing tips for optimizing your suitcase and freeing up more space for your long-haul essentials.
