Excellent beach access and exquisite dining: My experience at the iconic W Barcelona

It's been a decade since TPG last reviewed the W Barcelona, so during a recent football-centered visit to the Catalonian capital, I decided to explore if the hotel has aged like a fine cava.
This iconic hotel features a massive sail-shaped building overlooking the beach; as a Marriott Bonvoy property, it stands as one of the most famous hotels in the city and possibly one of the most iconic W Hotels in the collection.
Here’s what staying at the W Barcelona is really like.

What is the W Barcelona?

Since its opening in 2009, the W Barcelona has stood as a large hotel featuring 473 rooms and suites within a building uniquely designed to resemble a sailboat, crafted by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. The 26-story hotel offers stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea, and its beachfront location attracts travelers eager to unwind by Playa Sant Sebastia. Amenities include a pool with W's signature Wet Deck bar, a beach club, several restaurants, and a spa.

The location

I arrived at the Barcelona-Sants station by high-speed train from Madrid and treated myself to a taxi that cost around $20. Barcelona boasts excellent public transport; the routes are straightforward, with frequent buses and trains. There's a bus stop right outside the W if you're looking to save money. Public transport takes about 45 minutes from the train station, while a taxi will get you there in roughly 20 minutes.
From the airport, expect a 30-minute taxi ride to the hotel, costing between $35 and $40.
The hotel is slightly removed from the city center, but a quick bus or metro ride can take you to all of Barcelona's major attractions. Alternatively, a 30-minute stroll along Las Ramblas will put you right in the heart of the action. Just note that while at the hotel, you may not feel immersed in the city's hustle and bustle, although the stunning views from your window will remind you of it.
However, the hotel is located in the lively Barceloneta neighborhood, one of Barcelona's oldest areas, now famous for its vibrant nightlife. You are right by the beach, with a lengthy boardwalk lined with numerous outdoor seafood restaurants along the coastline.

First impressions
As the taxi arrived, the valet greeted me by opening the door and swiftly taking my luggage before I even realized it. A gentle ocean breeze provided a refreshing contrast to the warm 75-degree Fahrenheit weather as I approached the entrance. Even before stepping onto the promenade, I felt a sense of elegance as the doorman welcomed me through the grand glass doors leading into the vibrant, art deco-inspired lobby.

Upon entering, it became clear that this was primarily a party hotel. The gleaming silver tiled walls draw your gaze up to the stunning glass ceiling, while a dedicated elevator whisks you directly to the rooftop nightclub. With red walls and carpets adorning the hallways, I felt as if I had stepped into a Miami hotspot from the early 2000s. Although the W Barcelona was established in 2009 and refreshed in 2016, some aspects felt a bit outdated, yet still maintained a fresh appeal.
The check-in process was smooth and efficient. With six check-in counters available, I encountered minimal wait time—perhaps just two minutes—despite arriving during the busy mid-afternoon rush. Should you find yourself waiting in the lobby, there are playful seating options, including several hanging chairs.
The accommodations

My ocean-view room was situated on the 22nd floor, and it truly took my breath away. I spent about 15 minutes just gazing out the window at the stunning city skyline before even thinking about unpacking. The view encompassed both the city and the ocean, allowing me to sit back and watch La Barceloneta’s vibrant boardwalk, with the iconic La Sagrada Familia providing a picturesque backdrop.

The room was designed as a studio, which I genuinely preferred. This layout let me enjoy the view from any spot in the room. The automatic blackout shades efficiently blocked out light when it was bedtime and provided a delightful reveal each morning. They even featured small holes that mimicked stars when city lights peeked through, adding a charming touch.

The room was adorned with various ocean-themed design elements, including blue accent furniture and a carpet that resembled rolling waves. Positioned by the windows were a loveseat and a boxy armchair, accompanied by a small side table. The white walls had a grid-like design, and one wall featured a TV. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and I slept soundly.

Behind the bed, a spacious desk with a rolling chair provided a comfortable workspace with ample room.

Adjacent to the room's entrance was a semi-open bathroom; the vanity and mirror were visible from the room, while the toilet and shower were enclosed behind separate glass doors.
One downside regarding the bathroom setup was the lack of towel hooks; there was only a single hook available, which I used for my toiletry bag. Consequently, I ended up draping my towel and bathrobe over the shower door.
The bathroom counter offered enough space for one person, but it was cramped for two. One of the toilet flush handles was nonfunctional upon my arrival, but it was repaired after I notified the concierge.

The bathroom featured some nice amenities, including Davines Momo bath products along with creams and lotions from Skin Regimen.
The room included a signature W MixBar stocked with various spirits and an assortment of snacks, including candies and protein bars.
In the entryway, there was a closet that opened to reveal drawers, a safe, a luggage rack, a robe, an iron, and an ironing board.
Overall, the room reflected the hotel itself: tidy and well-maintained, though somewhat nostalgic in style. Ultimately, it didn’t detract from my stay — the breathtaking view and the abundance of plush pillows on the bed made up for it.
Food and drink
At W Barcelona, you'll find several bars and dining options: the Japanese restaurant Noxe on the 26th floor, the Peruvian spot Coya, a meat-focused grill named Fire, the Wet Deck pool bar, the W Lounge, and the Salt Restaurant and Beach Club.
The W Lounge is conveniently located just off the main lobby, offering beach views and a deck that overlooks the ocean. It features specialty cocktails with intriguing names like Paradise Chido and Golden Tie. When I inquired about his favorite, the bartender mentioned these were premixed and "designed for kids," suggesting they were quite sweet and catered to less discerning tastes.
I decided to give it a try, ordering the Kaulhounia ($16), and, well, the bartender was spot on. While it had a hint of bitters, the cocktail was overall refreshing and reminded me of a light, alcoholic creamsicle.
For my second drink, I asked for the bartender's suggestion, and he recommended a spicy margarita. It's a cocktail I can whip up at home easily, and this rendition didn't quite hit the mark for me. It was particularly disappointing since Barcelona is famous for its cocktail scene. In general, the cocktails at the W Lounge fell flat.
However, the food at the lounge was a pleasant surprise. I opted for a classic smokey toast with red peppers ($16) and anchovies ($6.50). The combination of salt, tomato, and charred toast was absolutely delightful.
But the real highlight came when I took the elevator straight up to Coya — a Peruvian-inspired restaurant that appeals to food lovers and culture enthusiasts alike.
As soon as I exited the elevator, I felt like I had entered another realm. The ambiance was a blend of rainforest charm and a trendy ceramics workshop, infused with a strong dose of Barcelona modernism. The design of the space was outstanding, but the food surpassed even that.
The cocktail selection was remarkably vast.
Following the server's recommendation, I opted for the Pisco sour. It’s quite a potent sour, so you really need to enjoy sours to appreciate this one, but wow, was it delicious.
I paired it with the Atun Chifa, Coya's spicy twist on ceviche. The tuna was incredibly fresh—the spice hit gradually, building subtly—and it was served with a sesame and seaweed cracker. I struggled to resist the temptation to sip the marinade after finishing the tuna. (Okay, I did sip some of the marinade, and I have no regrets.) This could easily be the best ceviche I’ve ever tasted.
For my main dish, I chose the Iberian pork accompanied by homemade guava barbecue sauce and a side of baby potatoes. The potatoes were perfectly crispy outside and tender inside, and the green sauce drizzled over them was a perfect match.
I had my doubts about the guava sauce, but it turned out to be delightful—light, citrusy, and not overwhelming at all.
Coya is one of those restaurants where every ingredient is purposefully chosen and thoughtfully prepared. If it arrives on your plate, enjoy it. The grilled lime on the side? Squeeze it over the pork—it enhances the flavor. They truly know what they're doing.
I also took advantage of room service several times, and the longest I waited for my order was just 20 minutes.
I tried the salmon Caesar salad, which was excellent—the salmon was served warm, the anchovies were canned but still tasty, and there was just the right amount of dressing. Overall, it was a fantastic salad. I also decided to indulge in a Basque cheesecake late at night (as one does). It was divine, less sweet than the American version, lacked a crust, and was lighter and fluffier than what I was used to.
I must mention that the tableware was exceptional throughout. Each bowl and glass showcased a playful or vibrant design.
Amenities and service
The gym at W Barcelona was impressively equipped. The machines appeared pristine and modern, providing nearly everything travelers might need, including treadmills with views of the ocean.
I glanced around but ultimately chose to jog along the waterfront instead of using the indoor treadmill.
Additionally, there's a comprehensive spa offering all the typical saunas, relaxation areas, and pools you'd anticipate from a high-end hotel spa.
Moreover, guests have the option to schedule therapeutic services, which include body scrubs, massages, and beauty treatments such as manicures or waxing.
I visited during a colder month, so the pools were closed; however, the oceanside decks offering food and drink service remained accessible. I found myself at the beach deck one late afternoon.
Despite the cooler season, temperatures reached a pleasant 75 degrees, and relaxing on the beach while gazing at the water is refreshing no matter when you visit. The short two-minute walk made it easy to bring along towels and extra clothing.
Reasons W Barcelona might not suit everyone
If you're seeking a premier luxury hotel experience, this might not be the ideal choice. However, if breathtaking views, cozy accommodations, and quality dining options are your priorities, this hotel is definitely worth considering for at least one night—especially if you can use Marriott Bonvoy points to book.
If you're spending just a few days in Barcelona and plan to focus on museums or historic sites, the W Barcelona may feel a bit remote. You might find a hotel located more centrally to be more convenient.
Moreover, this hotel may not be the best option for those who prefer to avoid the clubbing scene popular among Gen-Zers and millennials.
Accessibility
The W Barcelona offers accessible parking and three pools equipped with hydraulic lifts. The main entrance features a sloped entryway, and service animals are permitted. Elevators are the primary means of getting around the property; while they aren't particularly spacious, they can accommodate a wheelchair comfortably.
The hallways are spacious enough to allow for easy navigation with a wheelchair.
The hotel features accessible rooms and suites, along with bathrooms designed for accessibility that include portable shower chairs. The doors provide a clear width of 81.2 centimeters (approximately 40 inches).
The beach facing the hotel in Barceloneta also offers complimentary assisted bathing services, though the hours of operation are limited. Additionally, equipment such as floating wheelchairs and water crutches are available, along with a hoist for transferring to beach chairs.
Checking out
My stay at the W Barcelona was truly wonderful. Each morning, I woke up to the stunning sunrise over one of my favorite cities, which is an experience that words can hardly capture. If you're fortunate enough to visit during the summer, the location shines even more with its pools and beachside dining options. This is the perfect Mediterranean getaway if you're exploring this part of Europe when the weather is warm.
While the views and summer activities are appealing, the overall amenities don't fully align with the expected experience at this price range. Although I enjoyed my stay, I might choose a different hotel during my next visit to this stunning Catalonian city.
